Itzl, as my signal dog, accompanies me everywhere I go. I don't travel far, but I do travel a lot between Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, and (of course) Oklahoma. We stay in hotels and eat in restaurants as we travel.
Even though he's legally allowed to accompany me, and even at so-called "pet friendly" places, it's not always easy.
I am amused by all the "pet friendly" lists of resorts and hotels.
The secret to them being good "pet friendly" resorts and hotels is money. Lots of it. Most of the "pet friendly" hotels charge between $15 and $250 per night, with some of them offering a discount for the second pet. If you choose to take advantage of any of their "pet amenities", be prepared to spend between $35 and $175 for each amenity.
I will admit, I have never taken advantage of any of the amenities they offer. Some of them I can't use, like the pet walking service, or the day spa, the doggie/kitty day care, pet massages, "puppy pagers" "puppy cams", air fresheners... Others, Itzl turns his nose up at, like the flea treated fancy pet beds, the pet food bowls, pet toys, or the special pet foods and snacks. I supply his food and treats and while he'll eat a wide range of foods, for some reason, he refuses to eat the food provided by vets, hotels, and "pet friendly" places. He won't take food from people he doesn't know and trust - which limits who feeds him to me, my children, my sisters and their spouses. That's it.
All of the other things that these "pet friendly" resorts and hotels offer - leashes, flotation vests, pet night robes, pet towels, fancy collars, pet food placemats, potty pads, blankets, paw wipes, pet shampoo and deodorizer, tote bag, aromatherapy (some of those hotels reek, yanno - even the 5 star ones) - I bring for him, along with other items he might need, depending on what we'll be doing.
The problem with staying at a "pet friendly" hotel is that even though Itzl is a service dog, they try to pawn all those items off on us and charge us for them.
If Itzl were a pampered pet dog, I might be tempted into buying some of them, but we travel often enough that even that would pall after a while.
The one thing I wish all these "pet friendly" hotels provided, and the one thing I have not seen at any of them, is a comfortable toileting area for pets. How hard is it to have a patch of grass with a tree or tall plant in it? While I carry poop bags for Itzl, if it's a "pet friendly" resort or hotel, they could put up a pooper scooper station for "pet parents" who don't think about that aspect of pet ownership.
All I ask for when I travel with Itzl is a nice, comfy place for him to be toileted - a private area, grassy, with a small tree or non-toxic shrub and maybe a few pretty flowers, protected from the worst of the weather, with a bench for me to sit and wait on. Since not all dogs are as little as Itzl, it would be nice if this was large enough for an average sized 40-80 lb dog. A 10'x10' patch would be adequate. If it had an awning or overhang to protect the handler from standing in the rain or sleet, that would be a nice extra. We don't need fancy pets, masseuses, food dishes and place mats, pet spa robes, or any of those other amenities anywhere near as much as we need a nice spot for the dog to poop in peace.
