Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney love their Citizens United cash
According to
USA Today's analysis of the latest FEC reports, Mitt Romney's Super PAC has raised $43.2 million, nearly twice as much as Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum combined and nearly seven times as much as President Obama. $22.4 million of Romney's Super PAC fundraising came from "super donors," contributors who made donations of at least $500,000 each. Newt Gingrich raised nearly as much from super donors, $18.1 million.
In all, just 43 of these super donors have donated a combined $52.3 million to Super PACs of the current candidates. With a combined total of $40.5 million, a little more than three-quarters of these "super donations" went to Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich.
Just over half of Romney's haul came from these large contributions, while 96 percent of Gingrich's did—including 88 percent from Sheldon Adelson and his family.
Overall, the five current candidates have raised $78 million for their Super PACs. 55 percent of that total went to Mitt Romney and 24 percent went to Newt Gingrich, so two candidates alone account for nearly 80 percent of Super PAC fundraising.
Welcome to democracy, Newt Romney style.
