I was watching Rachel Maddow last night cataloguing my buddy Mitt’s many, many lies and flip-flops. The lies often are connected to the flip-flops because, when confronted with a flip-flop, he often says “I never said that.”
Well, now that Mitt appears to be closing in on the nomination, Mitt likely will move back to the center, as his spokesman indicated with the becoming famous Etch-a-Sketch analogy. So, I’m wondering if Mitt will reverse one of his prior reversals as he moves left. That would be a “flip-flop-flip.” It seems entirely possible. Certainly character traits like integrity and honesty wouldn't prevent it.
Would it be unprecedented if he did? I’m not talking about the reversal of a momentary or very short-lived change in position. I’m sure that happens frequently. I mean a situation where a politician reverses a longstanding position of his, holds the new position for an election cycle or more, then moves back to his original position.
My guess is that there have been instances of this in the past, but I can’t remember a specific example. If anyone can, please, please comment. Also, what do you think of the possibility that Mitt will break new ground on this front?
