The state of New York currently requires all handguns sold to have their "ballistic fingerprints" that the rifling imparts upon fired ammunition stored in a database. However, as anybody who knows anything about this can tell you, that doesn't have any effect other than to inconvenience people who seek to purchase handguns. Take a minute to guess how many of the hundreds of thousands, probably millions of crimes committed with handguns since the establishment of this system have been solved due to a positive match from this database. Your minute is up, the answer is two. It is prohibitively expensive and relies on pseudoscience, so why is the state using this system? The state legislature asked the same question and decided to remove it and replace it with a handgun microstamping system.
Microstamping is a process in which marks are inscribed by laser upon the firing pin in order to give it a distinct impression upon the primer that could aid in identifying which weapon fired spent casings. New York was considering adopting this as a replacement for its old system, requiring New York-manufactured (and possibly New York-sold) handguns to be microstamped. There are many weaknesses to this system, not the least of which is the immense cost in converting equipment at the factory. As with the old system, the marks would necessarily be examined by microscope in order to be admissible in court and would be completely unrecognizable from what's recorded in the database after the weapon fired fewer than forty rounds of ammunition.
Freedom Group, a holding company of firearms manufacturers, mostly manufacturing their weapons in New York, objected to this. They said that the cost of converting their factories wouldn't justify staying in New York. Due to being faced with the prospect of thousands fewer jobs in New York, the New York state legislature no longer has microstamping on the table.
Freedom Group includes but is not limited to:
Remington Arms, one of two firearm manufacturers to become a household name (the other is Colt, which is not owned by Freedom Group)
DPMS Panther Arms and Bushmaster Firearms International, the most popular manufacturers of AR-15-style semi-automatic rifles in the United Staets
Marlin, the most well-known manufacturer of lever-action firearms
Advanced Armament Corporation, manufacturer of specialized AR-15's and sound suppressors
If you want to attribute a legislative item to the firearms industry, attribute this one or one of the import restrictions. Usually when pro-gun control people say something like that, they end up demonstrating why it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool.
