You know, I’m beginning to think that Trayvon Martin did try to beat the crap out of his stalker (despite the apparent lack of injury on the police tapes). Yeah, he’s just a kid (but older than the “Bambi” photo that MSNBC likes to run), but he’s a terrified kid. He’s been running from this spooky white dude who keeps running him down—and you know what happened? I think at some point Trayvon stopped running, turned to face his attacker, and stood his ground. They argued and tussled, and maybe he did manage to knock Zimmerman down. And then the gun came out, and the screaming started.

I just wish that Trayvon had managed to grab that gun. Because at that point, he would have been legitimately and beyond a shadow of a doubt terrified for his life—and Florida law very clearly gives a man in that position the absolute right to STAND HIS GROUND AND PULL THAT TRIGGER. This scenario isn’t even nuanced. When the cops arrive a few minutes later to find Zimmerman dead on the grass, and Trayvon standing over him with the gun, in shock at what has happened… why, they probably wouldn’t even have arrested him after questioning. He’d have been home in his own bed with his bag of skittles before the night was over. Right? Right?

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

First of all, speculating that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman runs against the witness statements and crime scene videos to date and can be used by rightie racist bastards to "prove" that "even lefties" "know" that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman.

Second, speculating as to what Trayvon would or wouldn't have done if he had seized Zimmerman's weapon also plays right into the hands of racists with their "scary black guys with guns" emotional narrative.

Bottom line is, all we should be saying at this point is that Zimmerman deserves to go before a judge & jury.  Anything else is speculation and can be used by racists to open digressive arguements.  We need complete convergence on "give him his day in court" so there is no other narrative circulating about this until after the verdict comes in.

I'd strongly suggest deleting the diary, otherwise I can see it getting buried in a large pile of stale donuts.

"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.

Unless the diary has been edited, that only speculates that he faced him and stood his ground.  Maybe he defended himself when Zimmerman attacked.

This is consistent with the account of Trayvon Martin's girlfriend:

She told attorneys she then heard the 17-year-old ask "What are you following me for?"

Then a man, presumably George Zimmerman, replied: "What are you doing around here?"

The girl said Trayvon must have been pushed because his headset fell off and the phone call ended.

From the timing, this certainly appears to be the beginning of the fatal confrontation.  And since Trayvon is asking the first question there, it seems likely he would have faced Zimmerman in order to ask it.

If his parents had called the police in that gated community to report a "suspicious person," what would the police have done?

I think the above video posted by the Sanford police clearly shows the cut on the right side of Zimmerman's nose.

We have no witnesses as to who threw the first punch, but pretty much every witness attests to a fight going on (including multiple 911 calls), and you have police officers and fire department rescue people who saw and documented Zimmerman's injuries.

Aside from the fact that some Zimmerman supporters have been grossly exaggerating the extent of his injuries, I'm not sure why people want to deny he was injured at all.  Of course he had a couple of cuts and bruises, he was in a fight.

Hopefully future diarists will restrict themselves to reporting substantive developments in the case and will try to stop speculating.
