You know, I’m beginning to think that Trayvon Martin did try to beat the crap out of his stalker (despite the apparent lack of injury on the police tapes). Yeah, he’s just a kid (but older than the “Bambi” photo that MSNBC likes to run), but he’s a terrified kid. He’s been running from this spooky white dude who keeps running him down—and you know what happened? I think at some point Trayvon stopped running, turned to face his attacker, and stood his ground. They argued and tussled, and maybe he did manage to knock Zimmerman down. And then the gun came out, and the screaming started.
I just wish that Trayvon had managed to grab that gun. Because at that point, he would have been legitimately and beyond a shadow of a doubt terrified for his life—and Florida law very clearly gives a man in that position the absolute right to STAND HIS GROUND AND PULL THAT TRIGGER. This scenario isn’t even nuanced. When the cops arrive a few minutes later to find Zimmerman dead on the grass, and Trayvon standing over him with the gun, in shock at what has happened… why, they probably wouldn’t even have arrested him after questioning. He’d have been home in his own bed with his bag of skittles before the night was over. Right? Right?
