As some of you are aware, a new group was formed recently for Southern Kossacks of all stripes from many states.
We were very pleased at the positive feedback received about the group. It is good to have a community as diverse as this to share our struggles and triumphs with.
And this is just the beginning...
We are working on different items of interest from Southern mouths to Kossack ears.
Join me below the reverse double treble clef for the first item on the agenda...
Anyone who lives, works, and plays in the South knows of progressive heroes and heroines pushing that boulder uphill to make a positive difference. These people fight for what is right against strong odds and headwinds, but they remain largely unheralded for their work.
There is the Southern Celebrity here or there who makes a difference. Take Dolly Parton for example and the many things she is involved with. She is a vocal advocate for GLBT rights. She started a charity to promote literacy with children. She was also one of the few in the country music industry to speak out and defend Natalie Maines and the Dixie Chicks when they were being attacked. And those are just a couple of things off the top of my head.
But that is the exception...
That needs to change...and we can help.
We need your help to bring these Heroes and Heroines into the light so their good works can shine.
I want to stress...no work is too small if it makes a difference. For example, if you have a neighbor down the street who mentors a gay teen who has no support at home, that would be a good candidate. We are looking for people who make a difference.
This person could also be someone that made a difference in your life helped you on your progressive path.
If you know of one of these people, please let us know in one of the following ways.
1. Write a diary profiling the Hero or Heroine. We will gladly republish it and give it some additional exposure. (Don't forget to email the group about it)
2. If you don't feel up to writing the diary, send an email to the group with a way we can contact your nominee for an interview
My goal is to have someone profiled once a week.
Just a hint of the first heroine on the docket. (unless someone else writes theirs first)
Did you know that the "Don't Say Gay Bill" in Tennessee looks to be dead for this legislative session?
Did you know that this bill has been brought up in many prior legislative sessions?
Did you know that there is a heroine here in Nashville lobbying on Capital Hill for LGBT issues and causes?
(Just a note...I won't be here in the comment thread until later this afternoon...I have church and softball practice. I'll join you about 6PM CST Sunday)
