Not too many details yet as this story has just hit the wires (Reuters):
Late on Thursday, Kraft Foods stated (without much promise) that they belong to many external groups, (including ALEC) that promote growth and fiscal responsibility.
And then they said this:
"ALEC covers numerous issues but our involvement has been strictly limited to discussions about economic growth and development, transportation and tax policy. We did not participate in meetings or conversations related to other issues.
"Our membership in ALEC expires this spring and for a number of reasons, including limited resources, we have made the decision not to renew."
Coming on the heels of Pepsico and then Coca Cola cutting ties with ALEC, this one is HUGE!
Credit for this goes to Color of Change among others, who have been pushing hard on companies to cut ties with ALEC on the heels of the Trayvon Martin case, as ALEC is responsible for the "Stand Your Ground" laws, as well as the various voter suppression laws they've been getting passed all over the Nation.
And let's not forget the Center for Media and Democracy's "ALEC Expose" Project and dedicated folks like our own (Kosack) Bob Sloan, who have been feverishly working to raise Public Awareness regarding this insidious, racist, misogynist, anti-immigrant, anti-democratic organization.
(Ask me how I really feel about these guys!)
