The short answer to why the US didn't find Weapons of Mass Destruction in Iraq is, of course, that there were no WMD in Iraq. The search had an unlimited budget and it turned up zip.

The further question is, given the enormous political stakes, both for the Bush administration and US imperialism as a whole, why no WMD were planted in Iraq, when it became clear that the search would not pan out.

Anyone familiar with my writing already knows that my answer does not rely on the integrity either of the Pentagon or the Bush Administration.

I think the answer is that things like that really aren't all that easy to fake and the political consequence of being caught in that lie would have been much worst than finding no WMD at all.

In the first place any "found" WMD has to have a creditable "legend." It had to be made somewhere with materials obtained by Iraq and manufactured by people in Iraq and that legend makes it much more difficult than simply planting a load of poison in a warehouse because it will be subjected to exhaustive tests also, not just the WMD. And then there are so many people that would have to be in the loop, the chances are great that somebody would spill the beans.

I only bring this up because many people on the left seem to favor elaborate conspiracy theories to explain everything from the Arab Spring and the Libyan Revolution to the collapse of the twin towers. If ever a situation cried out for the people in power to put the fix in, it was the failure of the Bush administration to find WMD in Iraq.

Just a cautionary tale that came to mind while watching the Green Zone...

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

traveling to Iraq and planting the WMD himself, conspiracies of this sort require minions. Loyal ones, and lots of them.

Orders may be given, but the guy carrying those orders out is likely to be a sergeant with a squad of infantry, and he's got no reason to do it, or to keep it secret.

  •  The old MIHOP/LIHOP debates (0+ / 0-)

Personally I never put much credit in either of those. But I do believe in HIHOP. Happy It Happened On Purpose. It's no secret that PNAC said that with the collapse of the Communist states an external threat to the security of the US was needed to keep fueling the MIC. So the moment they realized the US was "attacked" they seized on the opportunity to steal a few trillion from the citizens of the US and funnel it to their friends (and themselves).

The whole WMD snipe-hunt was just something to bamboozle low-information teevee-watchers (ie., most of the US population) into a panic so they could get the invasion they wanted. Once the money was flowing to Haliburton and other Republican supporters in the oil, aerospace and munitions businesses, they didn't need to find any WMD.

...there would have been "ironclad" "incontrovertible" proof that Saddam Hussein had been the one pulling the strings.

Hell, if 9/11 had been a government conspiracy, it would have looked nothing like 9/11.  It'd have been a WMD-driven attack, involving Anthrax or VX gas.

For sure they wouldn't have embarrassed themselves by making the muscle hijackers 15 Saudi citizens with nebulous connnections to Prince Bandar Bin Sultan AKA Bandar Bush. They'd have been 15 Iraqis from Saddam's Fedayeen militia. I doubt Bin Laden would have even factored into it since the Bushies were far more obsessed with the old school state sponsored terrorists like Hezbollah, Abu Nidal.

And even for the LIHOPs, there's no way the script would have included letting Bush stare blankly into space for 10 minutes on live TV as two hijacked airliners were still in the air throttling towards Washington DC.

If anything they'd have made damn sure our air defenses didn't completely fail us that day and Bush would have had a "Presidential" moment of ordering a shoot down of one or both DC-bound planes.

9/11 was not evidence of what a Lex Luthor-worthy criminal genius George W. Bush was. It was proof of what a bumbling, incompetent, asleep at the wheel fool he was.

      •  It would have back fired on them. (0+ / 0-)

The reason David Kay finally was forced to conclude there was no VX in Iraq was not because he had checked every place it could have possibly been hidden, it was he had checked on every place it could possibly be produced and he knew what all the scientist that could produce it were doing at that time.

Bush and Cheney would have had to plant a VX plant in Iraq, and the people to run it. After that they would have to worry that the "signature" of the VX they planted might point to US gov't sources as the Anthrax sent in the mail after 911 did.

  •  It was the French! (0+ / 0-)

Seriously the French made a big deal about sending troops if any WMD were found. After that Bush couldn't afford to fake any. I had thought it strange how offensive Bush was to other nations we were supposedly trying to have as allies. It didn't become clear to me he was pissing them off on purpose until after victory had been declared.

At that point it was to the victor goes the spoils. Even before 911 the Bush-Cheney cabal had already divided up Iraq's oil fields among future contractors. They weren't willing to share with the French. Their non-participation was the excuse needed to exclude them. I for one am grateful to the cheese-eating monkeys for keeping my country from faking WMD.
