I just ran across this article and thought it important with all the discussion of limiting access (actually removing access) to birth control:
early fighter
I honestly never heard of Mr. Baird, but he was one of the early fighters for birth control access for ALL women. We have heard so much of Roe V. Wade that most people will instantly recognize what it is about. We have forgetten these early battles, likely because we never thought we would have to fight them again.
I (as a teenager growing up in the 80's) knew about birth control and did not think anything of it. I had several friends that used various forms and it was not a second thought (at least when not in the moment). I never realized that it was fought over so much.
It is so hard to get people to learn history. I know that there have been attempts to make history more interesting with movies and such, but unless there is at least one or more gun battle or car chase, it is too hard to get people to listen, much less think how history relates to them. The other problem is that there so much to cover and some events (equal rights for women) over show other events (access to birth control for married and then unmarried women).
As sad as it seems, we are cursed with refighting battles that were once considered won. I am concerned that the people today are not up to the struggle, or, thanks to so much news out there regarding so much negitive with our politics and our world, that people just either tune out (too big and I am too small to do anything) or are overwhelmed with the number of issues, they don't know where to help or fight.
Let's hope that these anti birth control policies (as with so many other bad policies) are stopped before they become law, or are quickly changed shortly after they pass.
