As a people, we are at our best when we care for one another and when we help one another: when we give our time and money to help those in need. As you read about the Republican "gifts" to the needy which include the "right" to fail in a way that kills you (so as to not create a life of dependence on, you know, being alive), you realize how important it is to honor these progressive values.
The President thanks volunteers for honoring Dr. King's legacy by participating in a service event.
The Democratic party's commitment to caring is on display each and every day, from the First Family's personal commitment to the needy to the Obama administration's commitment to supporting and honoring those who volunteer to help others. It is one of the reasons that I Vote For Democrats.
The commitment to service:
President Obama has always been a strong supporter of empowering ordinary people to do extraordinary things by improving their local communities through service. President Obama asks how we – through both existing organizations and individual action – can take an active role in America’s economic recovery and improve our fellow citizens’ lives through our service work.
He believes that service consists of more than a "one-off" occasion. He believes that civic engagement and service should be a lifelong commitment whether at the school, community, city, state, or national level. This includes community service, government service, and military service. By empowering people at all stages of their lives and at all levels of society to stand up and help solve problems in their own communities, the federal government will encourage sustained civic engagement that will transform those serving, the communities they help, and the nation as a whole.
Martin Luther King, Jr National Day of Service - January 16th 2012:
To honor the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Day of Service and Dr. King’s life and legacy, the President and Mrs. Obama, the Vice President and Dr. Jill Biden, Cabinet Secretaries, and other senior administration officials participated in community service projects and events throughout the country. Led by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and the King Center, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service is an opportunity for all Americans to come together to help meet the needs of their communities and make an ongoing commitment to service throughout the year.
“Today, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And we should honor that legacy by acting as drum majors for service and lifting up those less fortunate – not just today, but every day,” President Obama said. “All of us can find a way to give back to our communities, to gain new skills, and to pull together, even when times are hard. That’s what Dr. King believed in, and that’s what will make our country stronger.”
Living their progressive values
Honoring and supporting service to our communities is a priority of the Obama administration and the Democratic Party: another reason that I Vote for Democrats and why you should too.
