That's right, Santorum is still going to win the nomination and I am going to tell you how. Ironically, the Romney campaign gave him the blueprint on how to do it. You see, everyone on this site knows that Romney has been lying about his conservative positions and even the conservatives are somewhat skeptical. But now that Romney believes the nomination is his, he has already started his etch-a-sketch to more moderate positions. Santorum is simply going to lay low and let Romney expose himself as the fraud he is. See more below the suspicious orange sign.
Santorum knew that he could not compete against Romney's money. While Santorum had been ahead of Romney most of the year, Romney was quickly catching up. In fact, some of the polls started showing a Romney lead the last few days while other showed it too close to call. Either way, Santorum couldn't afford to fall further behind while Romney continued to carpet bomb the state in negative advertising. Romney had already spent around $1.9 million and was planning another $1 million (source: http://www.philly.com/...). By suspending his campaign now, Santorum is hoping to freeze the poll numbers as they are today. Romney has already cancelled his ad buy so there is a chance that this strategy will work.
The genius part of Santorum's plan however is that he's identified the one truth the Romney campaign has said all year: namely that after the primary, he will get to change all his positions. So now all Santorum has to do is lay low and wait for Romney to anger the conservative base. Today Romney started taking some heat for the radical position that women should make as much as men for the same work (source: http://www.dailykos.com/...). While this alone isn't going to infuriate the conservatives, things like this will slowly chip away at the conservative's reluctant acceptance of Romney.
Between now and the end of next week, Santorum is counting on Romney to really upset them. Then on Friday or over the weekend, Santorum can jump back in saying that he gave Romney a chance but that he changed all his positions and exposed himself for the fraud that he is. He will get a bump in the polls in a still friendly state and Romney won't have an opportunity to buy his victory. The month of May will be better for Santorum as more Southern states vote and he will have the momentum at his back.
That my friends is how Santorum is going to win. When you are outspent 55 to 1, you need to find creative ways to win. So don't be surprised if Santorum comes from behind and wins this thing.
