Mayor Cory Booker greets more than 200 volunteers building a state-of-the-art community playground located at West Bigelow Street in Newark's South Ward. Funded through a grant from the Home Depot Foundation as well as contributions from the City of Newark and the Greater Newark Conservancy, the 2,500-square-foot playground was completed in a single day replacing an eyesore vacant lot in the community.

We know what you've inherited as Mayor of Newark. Fifty years or more of neglect.

CAPTAIN OF MY SOUL

Out of the night that covers me,
Dark as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeoning's of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Being from Hudson County (Bayonne), NJ, I've been seeing the good changes Mayor Booker has been making in Newark.

This though, definitely has me standing up and cheering! He is even more amazing than I imagined!

he never once said anything politically to me. Well only once. He forwarded Barack's DNC speech saying this man would be President of the United States.

Every time I see Booker I think to myself, he is going to be President someday.

Mayor Booker, Rebel ga.  I really hope that this works.  Bruce Springsteen, I hope, will make this possible.

What a great idea to list those charities so that grateful people can express their appreciation for his work by making contributions.

You brought tears to my ears with the Invictus poem; words that make me raise my thoughts in honor to a man who has been a deep inspiration in my life: Nelson Mandela.

A lovely association with Corey.  Nelson would understand what Corey is about and would support him 100%.

              Thanks for the heartwarming diary!

I saw in the newspaper that he wanted tickets to an upcoming Bruce Springsteen Concert. Bruce is a great person and I knew that if he knew Mayor Booker wanted tickets, he'd probably give him a bunch of them.

Cory Booker is such a nice guy and now this; Running into a flaming, (no less) apartment to save someone, well that's just true heroism!

Nelson Mandela has always been an inspiration, hero and role model to me too. An awe inspiring man.

I always thought that if President Mandella could do (26? years; I think, could have been longer), in a south african prison (I can only imagine the conditions), that I could do anything required of me!

Invictus is one of my favorite poems and it would remind me too; of President Mandella, most definitely!

Thanks for all the great comments SeaTurtle.

I decided to put charities on my diaries because that way if people are able to and want to they can just donate directly. It seemed like a good idea.

because in many a 'dark night' in my life when I was struggling with, what at times seemed like unending problems, I said just that:

"If Nelson Mandela could endure 27 yrs in prison in the prime of his life and come out to lead South Africa out of apartheid, then I certainly can dig myself out of "this" mess!"

I love the movie, "Invictus" btw; have you seen it?

Nelson Mandella is an inspiration to many people I'm sure. How could he not be!

True too, what you said about him being a young man when he was incarcerated. Then spending 27 years in jail. I was close.

I wrote this blog page for President Mandella on All Saint's Day 09'. I think you'll like it SeaTurtle.

order from Netflix, the movie Invictus.  It will warm your heart greatly.  I thought it was wonderfully done and true to the true story.  Morgan Freeman does an outstanding job as Nelson and Matt Damon as the soccer captain of the Bokkies.

                      http://movies.netflix.com/...

While it focuses on the soccer championship, it tells the backstory of his imprisonment as well.  And the poem is featured as well.

After you see it, whenever that is, send me a message about how you liked it.  :-)  (Your life is not complete until you see it!!!  hee, hee.)

        Boardwalk Empire by Nelson Johnson

A bustling little city by the seashore, totally dependent upon money spent by tourists, Atlantic City s popularity rose in the early 20th century and peaked during Prohibition. The resort s singular purpose of providing a good time to its visitors whether lawful or not demanded a single mentality to rule the town. Success of the local economy was the only ideology, and critics and do-gooders weren t tolerated. By 1900, a political juggernaut, funded by payoffs from gambling rooms, bars, and brothels, was firmly entrenched. For the next 70 years, Atlantic City was dominated by a partnership comprised of local politicians and racketeers. This unique alliance reached full bloom in the person of Enoch Nucky Johnson the second of three bosses to head the Republican machine that dominated city politics and society. In Boardwalk Empire, Nucky Johnson, Louis the Commodore Kuehnle, Frank Hap Farley, and Atlantic City itself spring to life in all their garish splendor. Author Nelson Johnson traces AC from its humble beginnings as Jonathan Pitney s seaside health resort, through the notorious backroom politics and power struggles, to the city s astonishing rebirth as an entertainment and gambling mecca where just about anything goes. Boardwalk Empire is a colorful, irresistible history of a unique city and culture. Here is proof positive that truth is stranger and more compelling than fiction. that explores the role of blacks in Atlantic City.

Called The Northside - by Nelson Johnson

Nelson Johnson frequently stopped working on Boardwalk Empire to wrestle with how best to handle the thorny subject of race. But he persisted, and the result was a chapter—"A Plantation by the Sea"—that inspired this powerful sequel.

In The Northside, Johnson brings the untold story of Atlantic City's black community vividly to life, from the arrival of the first African Americans to Absecon Island in the early 19th century through the glory days of the "World's Playground." Drawing on dozens of personal interviews and painstaking archival research, he reveals long-forgotten details about the people on whose backs the gambling mecca was built and offers a wide-ranging survey of the accomplishments of more recent generations.

Exploited for their labor and banished to the most undesirable part of town, resilient Northsiders created a vibrant city within a city—a place where black culture could thrive and young people could aspire to become artists, athletes, educators, and leaders of business, politics, and society. As Nelson Johnson shows in this unflinching portrait, Atlantic City was built on their toil—and the Northside was born of their dreams.
