It is on right now. Called Whale Wars. For those that don't know anything about this show, here is the scoop. A number of years ago a man named Paul Watson didn't understand why each year, even though it is against international law, Japanese boats were killing thousands of whales a year.
He had been to all the protests. He had signed all the petitions. Nothing was changing. As he says he isn't out there to hang banners, protest, hold hands and sing a song. He is out there to take direct action, physical if required, to stop them. And for eight years he tried. He took his first ship, the Steve Irwin to the Arctic and tried. Later a second boat, the Bob Barker (yes that Bob Barker gave it to him).
It seemed he was fighting a losing battle. Each year they'd go out and try to stop them and to a large extent failed. Well until last year, where they won. They shut down the entire whaling fleet. They packed up their "bags" and went home.
Well the whaling season is short and there is the rest of the year. Now they are going after illegal tuna fishing and sperm whales.
More below the fold ....
Now to a large extent Paul Watson is kind of a dick and a "media whore." I worry he has a vital goal, but can harm the cause by some of his actions. But there is no mistaking the fact the dude and the crews of his various ships are bad ass men and women.
I might post here, send a check, go to a protest. These folks are going about 100 levels higher. They are literally putting their boats and their bodies between whales and people that want to kill them. That might be a little more guts than I'd have. He even says (and why he can be something of a dick) that if it comes down to the life of himself or a crew members life vs. the life of the whale, the whale will live. At first when I started watching the show I thought it was just saying this for affect. I now actually don't think he is joking.
Now as I mentioned they are going after other illegal fishing with the same intensity. In fact, on the show that is on now they are in Libyan waters during their civil war, cause they felt with a war nobody would be monitoring what was going on.
