At the press conference with the Japanese Prime Minister today, the President was asked about the Republican manufactured claim of "excessive celebration" regarding the anniversary of the death of Bin Laden. The President quadrupled down on this refusing to let the Republicans downplay the event or engage in their classic misdirection. In doing so he could hardly keep a straight face, knowing full well how ridiculous Romney and his cohort now sound.
He started by saying,
"I hardly think that you have seen any excessive celebration taking place here. I think that people, the American people, rightly remember what we as a country accomplished in bringing to justice somebody who killed over three thousand of our citizens. And it's a mark of the excellence of our intelligence teams, our military teams and a political process that worked. And I think for us to use that time for some reflection, to give thanks to those who participated is entirely appropriate, and that's what's been taking place."
Perfect, but it gets better. Without naming Romney, the President said,
“As far as my personal role and what other folks said they would do, I just recommend that everybody take a look at people’s previous statements in terms of what they thought was appropriate to go into Pakistan and take out bin Laden. I assume that people meant what they said when they said it. That's certainly my practice. I said I'd go after Bin Laden if I had a clear shot at him, and I did. If there are others who have said one thing and now suggest they would do something else, then I would go ahead and let them explain it.”
Home run. "I assume that people meant what they said when they said it" has two meanings. Romney is going to be held to what he said at the time and I am a man of my word. I did exactly what I said I would do during the campaign even though I was criticized at the time by the likes of Romney. And I'm sure as heck not going to listen to their nonsense now.
