My son works for The Children's Home in Peoria, IL. They have a prairie site called Scott's Prairie. Scott’s Prairie is a 70-acre farm donated to the Children’s Home Association of Illinois in 2004 by the Robert E. and Marguerite A. Gilmore family. Over 1,000 youth, ages birth to 21 years old. who receive counseling, education and support services at Children’s Home visit the property each year to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of nature. Youth enjoy fishing, hiking, mountain biking, nature walks, cookouts and camping at Scott’s Prairie. The site is also home to our organic garden program. Community partners help our staff provide weekly lessons on food systems, plant growth, composting and the connection between agriculture and nutrition. The youth grow a variety of vegetables, donating 70% to Peoria area homeless shelters and food pantries. Last year, over 700 pounds of produce was donated – helping local organizations feed over 3,700 people!
You can help them get an orchard for the prairie. Please consider making this your project and share with your friends.
How do you do it? Well, you go to http://www.communitiestakeroot.com. You register and then you can vote there every day until May 31.
Voting for Scott’s Prairie will expand the educational programming for youth with mental illness and behavior issues while increasing access to fresh fruit among low-income populations.
Seriously, it only takes a few minutes and you can have the good feeling of knowing that you are helping a good cause.
I published this first back in April. The votes are now up to 1400 for Scott's Prairie. We still need people who will vote everyday. There are three rounds. All votes are cumulative.
Why not take a few minutes and register, then go back everyday and vote for The Children's Home Scott's Prairie. You can help some kids get a new way to learn.
