When Republican politicians say something is common-sense you can bet your bottom dollar it isn’t. Since no state money goes to abortion services in AZ, this bill makes absolutely no sense, unless you want to cut off counseling, access to contraception and women’s health care services that could make an abortion more likely. This is more pandering to the extremism that is passing for governance in AZ. Will women get out and vote in November and send a clear message to the elected officials in AZ that we will not be attacked anymore, that we are tired of the war on our bodies, that we are sick of extremism and hate? I hope so.
Brewer signed HB 2800 and announced it while speaking at a reception for the Susan B. Anthony List, a group which helps elect people to office who are against abortion. The bill was sponsored by Rep. Justin Olson, R-Mesa, which passed through the Legislature with Republican support . Gov. Brewer also signed last month a bill that bans most abortions after 20 weeks.
"This is a common-sense law that tightens existing state regulations and closes loopholes in order to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, whether directly or indirectly," Brewer said in a statement. "By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion."
The law aims to prevent contracts with or grants to any group that perform abortions that do not meet the federal requirements under Title 19 of the Social Security Act, which reimburses in cases of rape, incest or life endangerment. It also prioritizes how public money for family planning will be distributed -- such as to state-owned health-care centers and rural hospitals.
Planned Parenthood of Arizona officials have said the bill targets them and is intended to impact non-abortion services they provide, such as cancer screenings, birth control and well-woman exams. Fewer than one in 10 women seek abortion services from Planned Parenthood of Arizona, according to the organization.

Since a Federal judge just put the same law on hold in Texas you can bet this is another law that will end up in court. Does AZ know how to write any other kind? Seems we have lots of money to waste in court on lawyers, and time to spend writing bills that attack women while our legislators claim to be for small government. Common-sense? How about no sense and nonsense.
Women of AZ, have you had enough yet? Vote.
