I have written about how sponsors are continuing to flee the Rush Limbaugh show, how the movement to hold Rush accountable for his hate speech is evolving and growing, and how the damage to talk radio from the advertiser boycott has even infected all-music stations.

In the first few weeks of the boycott, numerous companies were announcing their departure. Media Matters identified 67 major corporations that explicitly stated they would not run ads with Rush. ThinkProgress identified 142 companies. A few companies (such as Arby's and Walgreens) later announced dropping Rush individually, and therefore encountered some heat from Rush supporters. Since then, the number of companies continues to increase, but their marketing departments have opted to leave quietly. The movement to hold Rush accountable is so diverse and widespread, no one knows for certain how many companies have decided to boycott his show, but the number of companies (large and small) is easily north of 500, with more joining the exit each day. (Rush claims 18,000 advertisers altogether, on 600 radio stations.)

The heat on Rush is so great he is apparently avoiding public appearances, and a recent ceremony to acknowledge his fame (infamy?) was carried out in stealth, behind locked doors, surrounded by a phalanx of men with guns to deter liberals from approaching.

As far as I know, only two major companies -- Tax Resolution Services, and Angie's List -- have opted to return to Rush. Tax Resolution Services returned during tax season, and continues to advertise. Angie's List had the audacity to contract with Rush to voice their advertising. The newly public company, which was already suspect, has continued to take considerable heat from the Daily Kos community, generating as many as 340 comments about un-subscriptions and corporate politics in a single diary. Now, Angie's List is getting additional heat over at Huffington Post.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  Angie's List response to Rush Complaint (4+ / 0-)

I had seen that Angie's List was now advertising on Rush's show and so I sent them a note to cancel my membership if this was true.  Here's the response they sent back:

Thank you for writing Angie's List. I apologize for the delay in responding to you. As you requested, I’ve taken the steps to ensure your account will not be renewed. Keep in mind, you can continue to use your membership until it expires on August 10, 2015.

We’re sorry to see you go, but thank you for sharing your thoughts about Rush Limbaugh. Our advertising strategy is to use as many venues as possible to share information about the service we provide at Angie’s List. We use this wide array of venues not to express support for any specific person, outlet or philosophy but to reach as many consumers from as many points of view as possible.

Just as we trust members to read reports and make their own decisions about which service companies to hire, we trust them to make their own choices about which outlets to watch, listen to and read. We don’t believe it’s our job to tell them which of those venues to support or monitor. That said, we have ongoing conversations about where to place our ad dollars, and we’ll certainly add your comments to that discussion.

Thank you again. If you have any questions, please let us know. Have a good day.

      •  The have an escalating bribery program... (3+ / 0-)

Anyone leaving is likely to be offered a 20 percent discount. If that doesn't do the job (and they think there is still a chance) they dangle a six month free extension to your subscription.

I've noted they're taking some heat from analysts over this practice, because the company (which had its IPO last November) is selling another 10 million in stock to fund more advertising. They're hoping to grow out of their balance sheet problems. In brief, their expenses are much too high, and discounts/free subscriptions only add to their expenses.

        •  overvalued and vulnerable (0+ / 0-)

market cap is 5x sales which is pricing in a lot of growth. This could be justified by revenues which have been growing at 10%/quarter, except they are losing money at an ever faster clip. If the revenue growth were to come to  a halt the stock would crater.  Apparently they are doomed to fail.    Even a partially successful boycott would put a lot of pressure on them:

From the cash side, the company has about $88m of cash as of December 2011 and it burned about $37 million is 2011. Clearly it will need more cash soon and will probably issue more shares to fund the growth of the company. Since we started looking at the stock, ANGI announced that insiders will sell $65 million of its shares while it will sell $10 million. Not a really good sign for current holders.

To finalize, ANGI is an $800 million company that is not able to translate its business model and growth story into profits and will not be able to do so in the future as its business relies heavily on marketing and sales people and the service is just not "sticky" as evidenced in the cancellation rate.

We believe ANGI's management will continue to grow revenues and continue to issue stocks to fund this growth until investors realize this growth is not being translated to profits and the company is losing about 20 cents on each dollar of income.

As a result, we are short this stock and believe it will finally go into insolvency.

them know I was not going to sign up for their service at the beginning of this month. I was annoyed initially just because I waited a couple of days and wound up getting join offers at 40% off the initial price.

If you can't give me your best price up front, don't play games with special join/pricing offers after the fact.

I did wind up needing to find a new provider so I went back through another service I had previously used. It wasn't nearly as smooth this time, but I think it was better than calling places randomly from online listings (or in the old days - yellow page listings).

... and angry.  To offset those feelings I started listening to Ed and Randi, I am feeling MUCH better.  But a couple of thoughts have come to mind.

    1) For those that boycott Rush, it might be nice to provide a way for them to know who is advertising on progressive talk radio and in our best interests.

    2) For those that advertise on both Rush and progressive talk radio and provide discount codes for services; providing the progressive talker's discount codes to the boycott rush team to use may be helpful as well.

The benefit of the first point is obvious (I hope).  As for the second, it would be a nice dig to la Rushba to have him provide air time for the advertiser and have a progressive talker get the credit.

    What do you think?

I haven't been here long enough to be considered a Kossack, does that mean that I'm just a sack?

  •  I dropped Angie a note about Rush and got their (3+ / 0-)

canned response which has been cited on Kos.  I wrote back and pointed out that if Angie is really a community as they claim, the least I can expect is the dignity of a response from a live person.  I also mentioned that I was considering dropping membership over this.

The only response I have had is a second dose of the identical canned letter as before.  As the second mate asked on the Titanic, "Is there no one in the wheel house?"

  •  My advertising contract was up for renewal and (4+ / 0-)

they keep harping on me to re-up but I told them already I wasn't going to because I don't support companies that support hate radio. This will undoubtedly hit my bottom line as I get most of my new customers through Angies List. But there are more important things than money. Perhaps next year I will once again advertise through them, but only if they have dumped Rush.
