Serendipity means a "happy accident" or "pleasant surprise"; specifically, the accident of finding something good or useful without looking for it.
I had guests from D.C. staying for the weekend that just left to return home by train. Yesterday, we were in the northwestern part of Connectiuct for a friend's brunch. On our return to my house, we were driving through Washington, Connecticut.
Per Wikipedia again:
Washington is known for its picturesque countryside, historic architecture, and active civic and cultural life. The town has strong ties to New York City, and is home to many cultural and business elites
One of the friends after reading about Washington on his iphone requested that I drive a bit on one of the side roads in town. I turned on the first road that I came upon. After about a mile, I ran across these white busts approximatley 10 to 12 feet tall set on a lawn by the road.
They were truly amazing and we all four got out of the car awestruck to take a few pictures. We had quite a discussion while returning home regarding the huge busts, who was the artist and who lived in the house. We finally decided that we would probably never know.
I was up before everyone this morning so I downloaded yesterday's photographs. I was studying this one taken of the same lawn with other types of sculptures
On the far right is a turkey with its feathers fanned out in a Fernando Botero way. I wish he showed up better in my photograph but do look closely please. I kept thinking that the turkey seemed very familiar. I checked a dairy that I did last Thanksgiving morning on the first turkey that received a Presidential pardon.
My inspiration for that diary was this turkey sculpture on a river trail in downtown Hartford that I stumbled across while walking my dogs with a friend last Thanksgiving morning. This turkey sure does look like the one in the homeowner's lawn yesterday.
The sculptor's name was Philip Grausman. Let's google him.
Philip Grausman (born July 16, 1935) is an American sculptor who continues to push the limits of the time-honored portrait in art.
Grausman has received numerous awards, including the Rome Prize in Sculpture, a Ford Foundation Purchase Award, and grants from the National Institute of Arts and Letters and The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation among others. His many solo and group exhibitions of sculpture and drawings have been displayed throughout the U.S.
and below is one of the first images that I see on google by Grausman
It was Grausman's home that we stumbled across yesterday and he was the sculptor of the turkey in my diary. I would call this artful serendipity.
