Lenore Romney was told after the birth of her third child that she could no longer become pregnant or carry a child. Five long years passed during which this held true. She and George even put in papers to adopt a baby from Switzerland. Swiss Mitt?
Suddenly, that all changed!
And then, on a boat in the Dakotas, Lenore disclosed to George that she believed, contrary to all expectations, that she was pregnant.
The Romneys returned home and, excited but fearful, went again to see the doctors. Lenore was promptly hospitalized. They concluded that "the baby should be taken and a major operation performed," George wrote later, a reference to the need for a cesarean birth and a related procedure. The prospect frightened the Rmoneys even more. Lenore's sister, Elsie, had had an operation two years earlier and "nearly lost her life," George wrote. But there was no alternative. The operation was performed, leaving Lenore "suffering." After it was over, the doctor told George, "I don't see how she became pregnant, or how she carried the child." But carry the child she did, and she delivered a six-pound son in good health.

But while the family was vacationing in the Dakotas, Lenore learned she was pregnant, recalls Jane Romney, who was about 9 years old at the time. "Mother was hospitalized immediately. I remember my father's face - the worry and concern," Jane says. "I hadn't seen that before." Imagine, then, the rejoicing that took place when Mitt was born and Mother was healthy.

Afterwards, Lenore started calling Mitt her "miracle baby".
How odd, that George and Lenore would suddenly become aware of her pregnancy, while on vacation, just in time to deliver a baby at a full term weight of six pounds. Maybe he really is a "Swiss Mitt".
