We do a ton of whining about the 1%. But we always couch our criticism the way Obama couches it: we're not against rich people. We're against rich corrupt people. In order to bolster our point, we cite the many humanitarians and self-less rich people who actually advocate for higher taxes, social freedoms, and other great causes.
All of that's fine. But where are these folks right now when the Democratic party actually needs them? The GOP is going to raise $1 billion+ from their SuperPACs. Where are Hollywood Democrats? Where are the rich musicians and athletes?
Our side can easily match the GOP's giving. The difference is that our donors would be a bunch of really cool celebrities and athletes instead of a bunch of creepy old white men.
The Koch Brothers are sociopaths. They fund fake science so as to more easily profit off of the destruction of the earth. I mean...I'd put rapists, brutal dictators, child abusers, and murderers lower than them on the morality list, but that's about it. I'd rank them as worse arsonists, bank robbers, dog fighters, and Dick Cheney. They're doing more than anyone else in the world to bring about the destruction of the climate, and they're doing it willfully in order to live a slightly more comfortable life for a few more years before they die of old age (they're old).
These are the sorts of creepy assholes who are funding the Republicans.
But where are the Democratic celebrities? Where are our lovable saviors? What are they doing? Is it an inconvenience for them to give up a small fraction of their massive net worth to donate to SuperPACs? Are they worried that Hollywood will develop a reputation as being a liberal place?
James Cameron made $257 million in 2010. Johnny Depp made $100 million. Steven Spielberg made $80 million and is probably a billionaire. George Lucas destroyed my childhood and easily has more than $1 billion. Larry David is worth $800 million. Well...the combination of Larry and Laurie David is worth $800 million. Ha. What's he doing? How about Leonardo DiCaprio? Robert Downey Jr.? Where's Master P? He's worth over $500 million. Is Matt Damon still pouting or does he maybe want to help out? Natalie Portman? Oprah? She has money, I believe.
I apologize in advance if any of these fine celebrities have already given at least $1 million to a Super PAC. It's too hard to look up Super PAC donations. But come on, guys!
I can't do it. I'm not rich. So get your acts together.
