When they are elected into power nearly every action they take undermines the security and stability of those already teetering on the edge.
They ignore the wealthy and those already living in poverty. They pinpoint and attack the most vulnerable. For example, they attack public school teachers in states having a majority of public schools thereby instilling the fear of unemployment in every teacher.
Doing this they succeed at creating the illusion that public school teachers in general are lazy, good for nothing loafers and in order to maintain your job and security you must prove that you are superior to your colleagues and that you aren't one of those "lazy teachers leeching off the taxpayer's dime." If you do manage to keep your position, you are rewarded by this false sense of personal satisfaction and false sense of superiority.
Then they attack your pension, your salary and your job and once again you are put on the defensive. You are forced to defend yourself against these attacks, you are pressured to prove yourself by taking a cut in salary and a reduced pension.
Then they go after your union by attacking your confidence and pride by suggesting the only reason you have a job is because of your union. "Without the union backing you up, you couldn't really cut it as a teacher." they whisper
You start to question your own value and begin to wonder if these accusations hold some kernel of truth. The seed of doubt has been sown and under the continued bombardment of lies, that seed sprouts and takes over your common sense and digs its roots into the foundation of your pride.
You start to question the purpose of the union. You start thinking you don't need the union, the union needs you. And with your recent cut in salary, those union dues are starting to look mighty good. Then someone says to you, "Have you ever even seen the Union do anything except protect the lazy and the incompetent. Besides, if you're as good of a teacher as you say you are, why would you ever need the union in the first place. You're just giving your money away."
You start feeling resentful towards the Union and anyone who has benefited from the Union's protection. You start keeping a mental tally of those colleagues who received help from the Union. Then comes a day when these implanted thoughts of resentment and jealousy coincide with a really bad day at work. Never recognizing that really bad days at work are quite frequent and every teacher has them.
And that's when the shift in your belief system occurs. This is the day you realize your bad day isn't your fault. It is the fault of lazy so-and-so and the union.
Republicans win again.
