Tuesday night I was filled with despair as I watched the election results come in from Wisconsin. I was also filled with anger and hopelessness. Anger at the national Democratic Party for not doing more, and anger at President Obama for not doing more. I know the reasons they kept an arms length distance. They didn't think we could win and they did not want to be embarrassed; but sometimes you have to put yourself out there with the base on the ground. I was filled with hopelessness due to the fact that with Citizens United; the wealthy can now buy any election seat they want. I don't think there is anything more we could have done in Wisconsin. Everything that could be done was done, and we still lost.
I am quite dismayed at the DNC and the Democratic leadership in general. I wish we had someone like Howard Dean, from the Democratic wing of the Democratic Party. I will do everything humanly possible to help the Obama campaign; but if he loses; I think that's it for me in party politics.
Citizens United must be over-turned. I believe there are only two ways to do so. One is for the President to win this November; and over the next four years appoint new members to the Supreme Court, that will over-turn this decision. If that happens - wonderful.
If the President loses this year, Citizens United will not be over-turned within the conventional party system. Romney will pack the court; and there is so much money flowing into each party, that neither party will be inclined to challenge it. Can anyone really see Max Baucas trying to get the money out of the system? (Or most elected officials for that matter.)
If Romney wins; I believe the only way to save democracy in this country would be through a huge citizens uprising. A group like OWS only much larger and not connected with the current political system. Will that happen? I think it's unlikely. Until their lives hit total bottom, it seems like the average American is pretty apathetic.
Sorry for being negative. I'm just not optimistic about the future of this country and the ability to change it through the electoral process.
