Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 9:42 PM PT (David Jarman): The AP has called it for Ron Barber! He leads in AZ-08 by 53-45 with 66% reporting.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 9:43 PM PT (jeffmd): In NV-04, Danny Tarkanian's 52-18 advantage in the Rurals over Barbara Cegavske has put him out to a narrow lead, more than blunting Cegavske's 31-29 lead in Clark. Given that Clark's precinct votes are 89% reporting (and all early/mail votes), it's hard to see how Cegavske wins without Nye Co. coming in stronger for her.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 9:47 PM PT: Here's a good observation: South Carolina is covered by Sec. 5 of the Voting Rights Act, which means that any changes to voting procedures must be "precleared" with the Dept. of Justice. I'm not sure whether erasing votes cast for Ted Vick would require preclearance, but in any event, the move certainly was not precleared with the DOJ.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 9:49 PM PT: The House Majority PAC is also looking like a winner in AZ-08. They spent $500K to air a pair of ads on Barber's behalf—spots which truly lacerated Jesse Kelly. These are guys you want on your side.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 9:52 PM PT: Here's a positive story out of Nevada: Progressives, who were unhappy with the conservative record of Dem state Sen. John Lee, ousted him tonight, backing the candidacy of Patricia Spearman, a first-time office-seeker.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 10:03 PM PT (jeffmd): Is Nye County taking a ganja break? Nevada's SoS Ross Miller weighs in - Tonopah is the county seat, but most of the population is in Pahrump, the southern end of the county. Nye is the 3rd largest county in the US, after San Bernardino, CA and Coconino, AZ.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 10:20 PM PT (jeffmd): Per the SoS, Nye County votes are reporting; Tarkanian beat Cegavske 36-21 there, leaving him at 32 to Cegavske's 28. The rurals saved his bacon once; he'll need them again to beat Horsford in November.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 10:44 PM PT (jeffmd): Food for thought moving forward: in the parts of new AZ-02 retained from the old AZ-08, Obama lost 47.5-51.2, but Ron Barber is winning tonight 53.6-43.6. And the new parts of AZ-02? 66.4-32.1 Obama.
Tue Jun 12, 2012 at 10:53 PM PT (David Jarman): We're about to call it a night at Daily Kos Elections; thanks for sticking around with us tonight. The only major races where there's no AP call right now are NV-04 (R), where it looks pretty certain that Danny Tarkanian has held off Barbara Cegavske, 32-28, with perennial candidate Kenneth Wegner at 21 and freely-self-funding businessman Dan Schwartz at 11. (I haven't seen a total number on how much Schwartz spent, but with only 2,728 votes, he may be getting up into a David Alameel-level of money spent per vote.) And the other is ME-01 (R), where remarkably, Jon Courtney has pulled back into the lead with 90% reporting; he now leads by about 200 votes.
