Zero Day was written by acclaimed author
David Baldacci and published in 2011. This is a multiple-murder mystery that takes place in West Virginia. It's a story about murders, so it does contain some violence. There is also sparse harsh language (swearing).
The a-book is published by Hachette Audio. The narration is divided between Ron McLarty and Orlagh Cassidy. Their voices do a lot to liven the book and make it an enjoyable listen. The sound transitions throughout the production add to the drama.
The book is about 13 hours of total listening time.
The Storyline
Army CID Special Agent John Puller is a decorated combat veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. His father is now retired and his brother is now in a cell, but both were also career military.
Tall and muscular, and a cat lover, he is one of the best Special Agents the Army has. And he's just been deployed to investigate the homicide of a colonel and his family in the very small town of Drake, West Virginia.
The father, mother, and their two children were murdered, the only survivor was a nonbarking collie dog. From the evidence, it appeared they were interrogated on camera before they died. The local mailman discovered the bodies while trying to deliver a package that needed a signature.
John has been ordered to work alongside the local police to get to the bottom of this mystery and identify the killer or killers. And the local police is personified by an attractive blonde woman named Sgt. Samantha Cole.
Samantha: "What are you, bionic?"
John: "No, I'm just in the Army."
This is coal country. And it stands to reason that if you're against coal mining or blasting for coal, you're against good-paying jobs for the people of West Virginia. But John just might prove that axiom wrong.
The bodies keep racking up during the search for clues, and now somebody wants John dead too. Soon the story goes beyond coal barons and meth dealers. It gets bigger than John could imagine, and threatens the entire town and more.
John and Sam have to save Drake, if they can.
