For the last week, the Facebook posts and communications from friends and family in Colorado have grown increasingly worried as wildfires consume vast chunks of the state. The weather remains hot and dry and windy.
The Waldo Canyon fire is considered the highest priority fire - burning near Colorado Springs. Apparently, it's driven many wild animals into the city. Thousands have been evacuated and many homes lost. The Waldo Canyon fire is near Manitou Springs, a truly charming mountain town. I have no idea if much or any of Manitou has burned or not. I think it's hard to say. Other fires have burned in the state and it has stayed hot and dry. One brush fire threatened the city of Brush. The air is filled smoke and ash. One person described the fires as apocalyptic.
A friend who lives in north eastern Colorado, away from the worst of the fires, shared last night, "I feel like I'm driving through Mordor."
