In my reading of Eban's piece it seems Dave Voth got handed a pile of muck when he took the reins of Phoenix Group VII. Eban says he was the leader of the group. So he either didn't have the tools necessary to stifle John Dodson's insubordination and total lack of professionalism or he failed to use them.
Dodson comes off as an immature lazy slacker with anger issues and just enough charisma for setting up his own tiny fan club.
Jerk AKA Dodson
I'm still not getting what the disconnect with **[ASSISTANT US Attorney, as has been pointed out in the comments] Emory Hurley is. He was either enforcing the law or he wasn't. The article doesn't make it clear to my satisfaction. I gleaned that he was part of the Arizona "gun culture" and possibly hostile to the ATF. If that was the case, then he should have been replaced. I also don't know of his provenance, was he an Obama appointee or a holdover? [I think Obama should have cleaned house, but sadly he didn't.]
If Hurley was unwilling to cooperate on prosecuting and helping with wiretaps, then what was the purpose of setting ATF teams on interdiction exercises? Seems ridiculous and expensive.
The NRA obviously doesn't care. They don't care if guns are going across the border, the gun manufacturers will make more and then lobby more. Arizona has seriously lax gun laws and they get what they deserve on their borders. I have no sympathy for their pandering to gun nuts and slobbering after NRA money.
Arizona should tighten their laws or else they can have cartels waging war on their border. It's not rocket science. The gun makers don't care, it's more money pouring in and all government subsidized. Heck they should like interdictions, they'd sell more as the government races around gathering guns up and "concerns" rush to replace them.
My prescription:
- Dodson: Fired. Sent packing with a scathing criticism of his incompetence.
- Hurley: Fired. Phoenix USA Office turned upside down and hosed out completely.
**apparently Hurley was reassigned to some civil division, let's hope he founders wherever he is
-Total audits of all suspicious gun purchasers and gun shops by the IRS. Why try to prove "intentions" when purchasing when you can follow the money.
8:45 AM PT: Jessalyn Radack had a diary up that sounded like an Issa press release and now it has poofed.
