I really like and enjoy reading Chris Mooney's material. If you don't know who he is he wrote "The Republican War on Science" and "The Republican Brain: The Science of Why They Deny Science--and Reality". Both are excellent books and may help you understand why Republicans are delusional. Link to Mooney article on "Smart Idiots" here--

I struggle with the concept of "Smart Idiot" because it seems we allow people with mental illness a pass. Yes, I do believe these "Smart Idiot" Republicans are mentally ill and should receive treatment. If when provided with factual evidence, the "Smart Idiot" not only won't believe, they will believe in the lie even more. So, there is something wrong in their brain that makes this occur.
Anyone who has dealt with someone termed a "Smart Idiot" will probably tell you they need counseling at a minimum. And some need to go to the Psych Ward. Anyway, I work at one of the Big Three auto companies now also known as the "Detroit Three". I worked in Benefits for a few years when the company was giving a healthcare option--1) fill out a healthcare survey and get a physical and if there is anything that needs to be addressed--quit smoking, cut down on alcohol, lose weight, etc. and you will pay less in premiums or 2) do nothing and pay more in premiums. This is an actual conversation I had with a conservative Republican on this issue--
Benny--"I was forced to get healthier".
Me: "How did the company force you to get healthier?"
His response--"If I didn't work with a doctor to lose weight, I would have to pay more for my insurance."
I respond--"The company didn't force you to pay more, you made the choice to get healthier or you could pay more."
His response--"It's all the fault of Obama and Obamacare."
I said--"That you are healthier and have more money?"
Benny--"No, that I had to lose weight".
BTW--this happened before the Affordable Healthcare Act passed and the Company still follows this policy--created before Obamacare--today. Actually, our company has been using this carrot or stick method for at least five years now. Benny has a Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree. He knew I worked in the Benefits department and knew what I was talking about but refused to believe the facts. That, my friends, is what we are up against.
So, is that "Smart Idiot", just plain idiot or someone who needs psychological help.
