Mazie Hirono is running a new TV spot this week in her race for Hawai`i's open U.S. Senate seat. The Aug. 11 Democratic primary is fast approaching! Her ad shows how the personal is political, highlighting how her challenging childhood taught her the importance of self-reliance and independence.

Please take a look at this 60-second spot and then follow me below for a transcript of the piece, some notes on the race and an opportunity to help ensure that MTV (Mazie Television) will stay on the air in Hawai`i:

Transcript of "Determined":

Mazie Hirono:  “When I was a young girl growing up in Japan, my mother endured a really terrible marriage at the hands of an abusive husband.  My mother planned and plotted, in secret, to get us all away.  She boarded us on the President Cleveland, and we set sail for America.  Those early years were really tough.  We literally lived paycheck to paycheck. I learned to be self-reliant”

Voice over:  “That’s why Mazie Hirono is determined to make Hawaii more independent when it comes to our energy and food.

Her plan would end the billions in taxpayer subsidies for big oil companies; incentivize Hawaii’s homegrown, energy sources; train a clean-energy workforce to create even more Hawaii jobs; increase promotion of “Buy Local” food programs,  and prepare a new generation of farmers.  A stronger more sustainable Hawaii.  From a people’s Senator, determined to make us so.  Mazie Hirono.  Democrat for U.S. Senate.”

Mazie Hirono:  “I’m Mazie Hirono, and I approve this message.”

Mazie is the only candidate in the race who -

- opposed the Iraq War and the Bush tax cuts for the 1%,

- endorsed Barack Obama for President during the '08 primary season,

- consistently voices support for the Affordable Care Act and the American Jobs Act, and

- is unwilling to cut Social Security benefits.

In short, she's an awesome candidate.

But she's facing a primary opponent who gets disproportionately positive and extensive media coverage - which means Mazie has to expend a lot of resources to win. If she's successful, she'll face a general-election opponent who's vowed to spend $10 million and is being supported by Mainland right-wingers like Karl Rove, Trent Lott, Foster Friess, and Steve Forbes.

So, it's important that Mazie stays on the air.

Please send a few bucks to Mazie's Media Fund and ensure Hawai`i residents get their MTV:

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
