We just finished up our second week at the Lahaina Yacht Club.  We had 38 kids.

Here's our motley crew.

The little girl in the rainbow shirt in the front row was almost three feet high.  It was her first time sailing.  She had an ear to ear grin all week.

Second day for both kids.

We did some racing.

The experienced kids used the Open Bics.

On Thursday we launched four Lasers and sent the hot rodders off on a one mile reach to Baby Beach and back.

The wind died at 10:45 Friday morning so a few kids decided to conserve energy.

The wind came back just as lunch ended so it was back to the races.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

something that small!  And of course never in a swim-suit!  The water is WAY too cold (and murky)... so we stick to the keel boats (a variety in the 25-35 feet category in our sailing club)!

Would love to sail in the warmer HI waters!

`Believe me, my young friend, there is NOTHING--absolute nothing--half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats. Simply messing,' he went on dreamily: `messing--about--in--boats; messing----'  I could not help but think of that line when viewing the recumbent erstwhile sailor.  I thought I was the king of the world at that age when I learned those skills and could take the boat out myself.  What a gift you are giving.

We spend about four weeks a year doing repairs to the boats and hardware.  Setup each day takes about an hour and requires hauling boats and marks down to flights of stairs to the water.

The payoff is seeing the kids learn a new skill or improve on what they've already learned.

I've been involved in the program for nine years and can't see ever quitting.

      •  Yeah, I'm surprised it's only an hour per day (0+ / 0-)

I can easily see that much time in set-up.  And, the instruction time is not to be discounted.  It's fun, but work too.  As I wrote, my hat is off to you.
