Now, think about the whole Mitt Romney campaign. I may be wrong here, but it seems to me that they never stopped playing to the base. The big Etch-a-Sketch we were bracing for never happened. And why? Because Mitt Romney doesn't have the conservative vote locked up. He really doesn't. And they've spent months upon months playing up the "severe conservative" credentials in order to try to actually get the base to vote for him.
In keeping with the silence on Mitt Romney's more progressive/moderate past, they are also keeping his tax returns from that time secret. I think that those tax returns will not make us mad, but rather will make the right mad. We already know Romney was involved with a company that disposed of aborted fetuses. I think that's just the tip of the iceberg. I think there's enough stuff like that in his financial past that would actually convince some of the RW base to stay home. Romney knows he can't win without an enthusiastic base, and that's why they're toiling and toiling to hide the things that would keep the right at home--both political and financial. I could be wrong, but it would all sort of fit together. If more about Mitt being unprincipled gets out, he has no chance at all.
