Okay, this is weird.
Granted, a lot of anti-gay videos and ads put out by the Religious Right are weird. There are reasons for that: (1) They're insane. (2) Their position is untenable and can only be supported by nonsense.
But this video...this video is a special kind of weird. This is approaching the weirdness of Carly Fiorina's "Demon Sheep" ad. It's just completely out of the park in the weirdness department. And it really shows how unhinged, desperate, and, well, batshit fucking crazy the anti-gay right really is. The insanity is only accelerating now that most Americans are on the side of equality and as the fundies deliver laughable attempts at scaring people into opposing full equality for LGBT people.
Follow me below the fold for the video. At the very least, it might give you a laugh.
The video, as noted by the HRC, was produced by CitizenLink, a self-proclaimed affiliate of Focus on the Family. Yeah, that's the kind of insanity we're dealing with. The gist of the video, I guess--even though, after watching it several times, I'm not really sure what exactly it's arguing--is that those who support marriage equality want to turn the United States into a police state. I guess these folks were slumbering (or doing "research" in their dildo-strewn basements) when the PATRIOT Act was passed, but that's another diary. Essentially, this video is trying to drum up fears that everybody, including the Religious Right, is going to have to "comply" with marriage equality laws. Which is just false, as anybody with any kind of an education knows--we have a First Amendment for a reason, and my boyfriend and I having the ability to civilly marry doesn't affect a single church. These fears are drummed up at the beginning of the video by a police officer who pulls over a man and asks for his marriage license to see if he has sufficiently "evolved." The absurdity is really quite funny, but the fact that so many idiots will buy it is not. Watch:
Is that not one of the weirdest things you've ever seen? The microphones, though...those were a nice touch.
The sheer insanity of the anti-LGBT forces of which this video is indicative is why we're going to win. Yes, there are AFA-subscribing, Dobson-worshipping, Robertson-watching, Bible-thumping morons who buy it, but what moderately sane person is this video going to reach? If this bullshit is what they have to fall back on, we're in pretty solid shape.
The clock is ticking before these folks are banished to utter obscurity.
