Darcy Burner at Netroots Nation, 2012
Darcy Burner at Netroots Nation, 2011
The ballots in Darcy Burner's primary election for Washington state's 1st congressional district race will be counted on primary day, August 7, but the voting starts today, with ballots in the state's all-mail election hitting mailboxes now.

Goal ThermometerDarcy is leading a crowded field of Democrats for the right to take on a tea party extremist. But a couple of her opponents have very healthy personal bank accounts, and moms with Super PACs. Darcy's got the grassroots support, but polling is tightening up. Her closest opponent, Suzan DelBene, has invested a personal fortune in this race, with a flood of television ads and mailers.

Darcy needs to be able to fight that, and her campaign has to start reaching voters as they fill out their ballots at home.

In this district, $3 of online advertising can reach as many 25 Democratic-leaning primary voters. Darcy needs at least 25,000 votes to advance to the November general election. As little as $3,000 to put her over the top. You can help.

Please, click here to give $3 to Darcy Burner.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Even more important, will there be non-dairy frozen dessert? I'm sadly dairy intolerant (lactose + proteins).

knowing the organizers, it will probably be Vanilla Ice Cream from Walmart.

I think most of them will be state office candidates from Thurston County. Im still going because I want to let them know how unhappy I am with Core Common Standards.

Darcy is truly amazing. I was very impressed by her at NN and hadn't expected to be.

Did I expect to like her? Yes.

But not to the degree that I do. She's is very impressive on multiple levels and if I had money she'd be getting a bunch of it.

I hope those who can, give her their full support. She will not disappoint.

I did hear that the the Dem representing my area, Rick Larsen, supports Suzan DelBene, is that true?
It wouldn't surprise me, and I'm voting for Mike Lapointe instead of Larsen but I'm curious as to whether that is just a rumor I heard about his support for DelBene.

I guess the fact that I don't support Burner and support DelBene probably disqualifies me from having an opinion about who would best and most effectively represent my congressional district.

    Or, perhaps, not.

In any case, I encourage other folks who'll be voting in WA-01 to look at the actual legislative accomplishments of the Democratic candidates for Representative.

I'm in WA-01 and plan to vote for Suzan DelBene as well.  I think she is more representative of the District and can do a better job of beating Koster up-and-down the district.  Suzan is not some kind of ogre or total DINO by any stretch of the imagination.  She'd be fine for the 1st.

They have created a world where everything is an opinion, and nothing is a fact, everybody is entitled to an opinion, and every opinion is equally valid.

And, as I have said many times, the most important woman running for Congress is Nancy Pelosi. I want her to have the gavel. And maybe I've been unfortunate in my friends, but every local activist I've spoken to doesn't believe Darcy can win the district.

I agree Darcy is impressive. She is an impressive progressive activist. I would love to see her run in a seat where she could win (McDermott's, for example). But you can be a progressive activist, or you can run for Congress in a sharply divided swing district, but you can't do both. The General in this district will be drowning in negative ads - you thought MomPac was bad, just wait for Karl Rove - and unfortunately Darcy has been writing the scripts for them, to add to the tally from '08.

I'm probably doubly disqualified from having an opinion round here because, having talked one-on-one with four of the candidates, and seen them in a forum, I'm leaning to Steve Hobbs. He may have some centrist opinions (or, in Kos-speak, conservadem, pro-choice, pro-marriage-equality, go fig), but he stands up for them and can be strong in the tougher parts of the district.

      •  Darcy's negatives (0+ / 0-)

As if on cue, today's mailing from LauraMomPac doesn't even bother to hide it: now they're actually saying how wonderful Laura is. And they add Darcy "loose cannon" Burner's negatives to the pile, with the "lied about her education" zombie lie and the "Obama is a Republican" tweet. Though, to be fair, it's hard to see how the Republicans can use that one against her.

The flier also, cutely, says that DelBene has been called DelRomney. The citation is to a press report about the previous flier in the series, which is where the term originated. I thought the echo chamber was a Republican invention?

To be fair, DelBene's numerous mailings and Burner's few (I may have been taken off the mailing list) have always been positive.

    •  Legislative accomplishments? (0+ / 0-)

See me more detailed comment below, but... having legislative accomplishments means you would only look at Ruderman and Hobbs (and Koster, of course), surely?

At the LD45 forum a couple of weeks ago you could easily tell who had leg experience, from their verbal approach. They were talking about how to get things done, how to make the sausage, as well as their positions and goals. The contrast with the other three was quite marked.

...has actually worked with Congress and understands how it works, what is broken and what it will take to fix it.

Don't take my word for it, listen to Rep. Raul Grijalva, Co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus:

“There are several qualities that a good Representative should have-- vision, tenacity, and an unwavering commitment to do the right thing.
We need more members of Congress with a true, progressive vision for the future, a representative who will put the interests of American families first. We need people like Darcy Burner in Congress.”

Proudly working on the campaign to elect Darcy Burner.

        •  Nonetheless... (0+ / 0-)

...her tone when I've heard her is still about the what, not the how. And I don't think Grijalva's quote contradicts that.

I didn't intend it as a criticism, anyway, just an observation. Everyone starts without leg experience. And I do think it's important to remain clear about your vision as well as the mechanics (which both Ruderman and Hobbs do).
