Alot is being made of why the tax returns of Mitt Romney are important. I don't want to see them and have them reviewed just to see if something is illegal although that is important. Lot's of people make mistakes on returns, even those who pay alot to an accountant to prepare them.
But as VP Biden said a few days ago, "Show me your budget, and I will see your values" or something like that, you get the point.
As a progressive, I think the tax system is confusing and tilted towards the wealthy. Most people believe that. That's why the right is holding on to what they have with dear life. I want to see how many tax shelters Romney has taken advantage of. How much he has given to charity, all charity, not just the Mormon church. I don't care that the laws he took advantage of are legal or not.
But I believe that shelters taken advantage of show the kind of ethical values that Romney holds. He has admitted that business owners need someone to build the roads and pay for police protection. That happens to be the government. Local, state, Federal. If his tax returns show and individual that would rather move money to Switzerland or the Cayman Islands instead of contributing to the larger community to pay for those things we need like roads, schools, etc. then that tells me a lot about his character. It also tells me how much I can depend on him to make things better on the local level. If he isn't willing to pay his fair share, can I believe he will do what we need done in the future years to build stronger communities? Or will I just see more of the extreme individualism we are seeing from the right?
It matters to me. I think these sort of things are what Mittens is hiding his returns for.
