She's in deep, this time. At my home blog, the Minnesota Progressive Project, we ran an item noting all the Republican and conservative figures who've come forward in the past couple of days to denounce her latest attempt to bring McCarthyism back to Washington.
She avoided a CNN reporter who chased her down the hall, stonewalled the press, and decided to attempt some spin on Glenn Beck...because, you know, who is a better audience for clearing up the truth about conspiracy theories?
This morning the MinnPost ran the following:
Bachmann now alleges Ellison ties to Muslim Brotherhood
By Devin Henry | 08:30 am
WASHINGTON — U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison has been one of Michele Bachmann's fiercest critics since she originally asked for a probe into the reach of the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. government. On Thursday, she accused him of working with them as well.
Bachmann told Glenn Beck that Ellison "has a long record of being associated with CAIR [the Council on American-Islamic Relations] and with the Muslim Brotherhood."
You know: that's like McCarthy, too. When it's pointed out that your original charge of un-Americanism against an innocent person is b.s.--you simply move on to make another smear. Classic McCarthy style, just keep smearing as long as you can--before an audience of friendly paranoids if possible--and you won't be held accountable for failing to substantiate the previous smears. Keep the panic going, as long as possible--your core audience loves to panic, they're as nutty and irresponsible as you.
What does Congressman Ellison have to say about Bachmann's allegations of his ties to the Muslim Brotherhood?

Ellison demands apology from Bachmann for Muslim Brotherhood claim
by Tom Scheck, Minnesota Public Radio
July 20, 2012
U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, a Democrat, is demanding that Republican U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann apologize for suggesting he has connections to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist political movement.
So first Bachmann goes after the Obama State Department with the sinister conspiracy theory...
...when she's called out on it she doesn't produce any evidence that the charges she made about a conspiracy in the State Department are true...
...instead she goes straight on to insist that a fellow member of Congress is hooked up with a conspiracy to subvert the US government.
The other day, I dreamed of Bachmannistan again... Bachmannistan was the name that anti-Bachmann activists in Minnesota gave to a mythical terrorist playground imagined by Michele Bachmann. After her arrival in Washington, she alleged a conspiracy to create a new terrorist nation in northwestern Iraq via partition of that war-torn nation with Iran. She told the press that it was already a done deal.
That was the first time in her career she made national headlines. Papers all over America responded with a "WTF," and she found herself in the embarrassing position of having to back off very serious, entirely unreal claim made during wartime.
This time, is like all the previous times--except that it's not. At the time she alleged conspiracy to brainwash America's children by gay activists, she was a political nobody. At the time she alleged the Bachmannistan conspiracy, she was a nobody in Washington; an unknown nationally. At the time she alleged that Barack Obama was secretly furthering a gangster government intent on ending American national sovereignty and 'practicing tyranny"--she was a conservative figure on the rise, backed by the Republican Party. When she alleged that there were anti-Americans serving with her in the US Congress, she became a truly national figure, well known outside conservative circles. And when she suggested that the presence of Democrats in the White House was related to outbreaks of swine flu--she was a favorite guest of Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity., and Glenn Beck at Fox.
But this time is a little different from all those previous times. Bachmann's not a joke these days, she's definitely a somebody in American politics. She's a nationally known conservative who's been praised by other conservatives and conservative media, an internationally known American political figure and former high-profile presidential candidate--and she's already been exposed as a lying crackpot in respected and mainstream American media.
This time, when she alleges the another fantastic, dangerous conspiracy inside the government (without providing any independent proof, admitting to her reliance on wing nut anti-Muslim haters as her source)--it's gonna cost her. She just helped her opposition in her home district. And she just helped the Democratic Party around the country. And she just proved that Republicans can't be trusted with national security if they give access to the files of the House Intelligence Committee to this nut.
ACTION LINK: Here's a link to contribute to her Democratic opponent this year, Jim Graves. Stop the craziness and hate in US government, Bachmann just gave Graves a better chance to win.
