Teacher's Comments from Ms. Steiner:
My Students: Math is an essential skill for any student to learn, but because my students have low functioning Autism they learn in different ways. Most of them are concert learners making it essential to have hands on manipulatives to help them learn. Our classroom is lacking many essential manipulatives.
As I stated above, my kids have low functioning Autism. Most of them are non-verbal, some say only a few essential words. We have the task of teaching them how to communicate, as well as finding different ways to have them show their knowledge. Just because they are non-verbal does not mean they don't have a wealth of knowledge in their brains.
They attend a specialized program for kids with Autism. They are considered "self-contained" because we are teaching them the essential skills to be able to be a part of the general education classroom.
It is essential to have learning tools to teach them, since they are unable to communicate what they know using words.
My Project: Again, we are requesting hands on math manipulatives to help students with low functioning Autism. They will help the students to show what they know without having to use their words.
This will help progress students to a higher level of learning and help students to gain more knowledge as well.
Your donations will help these students not only show what they know, but again help them to achieve higher levels of learning than they would have have been able to achieve without these manipulatives.
