I joined the Marine Corps in July 1966 and after completing a 30 year journey, retired in September on 1996. I started as a private and ended as a major. Major is not a senior rank but was a long way from being a private. I was stationed in many parts of the world and served on two combat tours during this time. I have a special attachment to our current military women and men as one of my stops was Desert Storm. These current military warriors are a treasure to the nation. Even though I totally disagree with the current conflicts these military citizens are heroes to me.
I remember clearly being told in 1968 not to leave the military installation in uniform because we would not be welcomed as a Marine in town. I couldn't figure that out. I was just a simple Texas boy that joined up instead of waiting for the draft. How could I be unwanted? How could I be a threat?
When I came home from Desert Storm, in uniform, total strangers said thank you and I was given free vacation packages for my family. I was still the same guy but the nation changed. We learned how to separate people from war even when we disagreed with the conflict itself. I really believe we are even more sensitive to our military heroes today than 20 years ago. In my opinion the nation has embraced those who serve in a familial way and have put aside the hate I saw in the 60's.
I am terribly grateful for this change because I know first hand the brave young women and men are doing the best they can to serve the nation. I want them all home as soon as possible and do believe they will be embraced by a caring nation.
They do need and deserve assistance in order to reenter civilian life and I believe the nation is ready to offer a helping hand. I am very proud of we citizens for the profound change from the 60's and hope there will be no more wars to test our support and gratitude.
