Really?
The US has had one of the hottest years in history and southern Europe is no experiencing the same heat wave.
97% of Greenland's ice cap has recently undergone a melting spree.
Corn and wheat are at an all time high on the commodities market.
The world's climate is shifting so quickly and dramatically that this year our planet will have reached record breaking temperatures on every continent. Yet there are still people who are totally dismissing climate change as a problem.
I'd really like to know what has happened to America's belief in Science.
The amount of information that is discrediting climate change isn't decreasing during this year's record breaking heat waves throughout our world. In fact they seem to be increasing in proportion to the problems that are occurring.
I think it is time for everyone who cares about our planet, cares about our children, and cares about our future to confront the people we know who are actively and aggressively denying climate change and ask them why they are behaving the way they are.
Tonight I was reading comments from people who obviously don't understand the affects of climate change.
I became frightened that there are so many people who don't understand what climate change means. These people honestly believe that climate change won't negatively affect their world.
It's obvious that these people have never been told exactly what could happen if our world warms up, even by a few degrees.
They don't know that ocean currents will change and with that change comes a change in the weather of the land surrounding those currents. England rarely receives snow, but last year they were no different than their latitudinal neighbors. They don't understand that precipitation is dependent upon the meeting of two opposing temperatures. They have no idea that just a few degrees can open or close pathways for that water rich atmosphere to go elsewhere. Areas that have never been previously been cultivated for farming may become the new harvest belt and it may take years for humans to adjust.
One example of how our world is accustom to regularity is how we have become accustom to the presence of Jupiter's Red spot. We believe that Jupiter's Red spot is a earth size storm that is maintained by internal forces we don't yet understand. What we do know is that the phenomenon of Jupiter's Red spot hasn't changed greatly since its first detection, over 300 years ago. We are baffled by the continuance of this phenomenon, but we aren't overly concerned by it. Humans have come to depend on the consistency and regularity of Jupiter's storm just as humans have come to depend on the consistency and regularity of our own climate and seasons.
All life on earth is dependent upon the very same regularity that we see in Jupiter's Red spot.
Our lives are dependent upon what we know as "our growing season". We depend on the regularity of precipitation to grow our food. We depend on the regularity of our seasons to grow and harvest our crops. We depend on the regularity of the life cycle in our oceans to feed our planet. These cycles are themselves dependent upon the regularity of the temperature and composition of our atmosphere to allow for the growth cycles that occur which produce the abundance of life all life depends upon.
Nearly every multicellular life form on this planet lives and dies according to their adaption to their climate. When that climate changes too quickly for a species to adapt, that species dies. This will be no different for us. Humans have the ability to adapt like no other species on our planet. We no longer bend to the forces of nature, we force nature to bend to us. But even we can't grow food if food doesn't grow.
This idea isn't difficult to understand. It isn't even difficult to explain. So why are there so many people who don't get it?
