Turns out NBC did not want folks in the USA to see a moving "Tribute to Victims of Terror" segment in the opening ceremony. So instead they showed Ryan Seacrest talking to Phelps.
It's a beautiful number and you can see it here: What NBC didn't want you to see
I think NBC has some 'splanin to do as to why they cut this and substituted Ryan Seacrest.
Update, Sat 11 am: Thanks for getting this on the Rec List, 1st time for me.
Mediaite has also picked up the story and has asked NBC why they didn't show the USA this moving dance/song tribute. So far, no response.

Looks like it is going to be up to us to get this story out and find out from NBC why this was cut in the USA.
Update 2:
NBC has responded:
So when it came time in the opening ceremony for something that has been widely interpreted as a tribute to the 52 victims of terrorist attacks in London in 2005, it's not shocking NBC didn't see lingering on that as helping its overall marketing effort. When asked why NBC didn't show the memorial, NBC spokesman Greg Hughes on Saturday said only that "our programming is tailored for the U.S. audience. It's a tribute to (opening ceremony producer) Danny Boyle that it required so little editing."

I am speechless but I hope you won't be! ALEC member Time Warner now owns NBC, is this the kind of censorship what we can expect in our future?
