U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement - logo
Does not actually provide abortions.
Remember how the House Republicans came to power in 2010 with their whole "jobs, jobs, jobs, all we care about are jobs" pitch? And how they haven't actually done anything on jobs because apparently, they think all the jobs are hidden in American women's lady parts?

Well, here's yet another not-a-jobs idea from the super-geniuses of the Republican House:

A Homeland Security spending bill approved by the GOP-led House on Thursday includes a provision to bar Immigration and Customs Enforcement from providing abortions for illegal immigrant detainees.
Oh, sure. Go to Planned Parenthood for your abortions if you must—after all, that's 237 percent of what they do there, according to various not-intended-to-be-factual Republican statements—but all the hippest chicks know ICE is the place to go for all your lady part needs. When you're not getting your pap smears at Walgreens, that is.

So how is this latest bill supposed to create jobs, save the economy, and preserve democracy for lightbulb freedom?

The measure, proposed by Rep. Robert Aderholt, R-Ala., would block ICE from using agency funding to provide abortion services for detainees except in the case of rape, incest or if there life of the mother would be endangered.
Oh, okay. So immigration officials won't be allowed to spend any more of our taxpayer dollars on abortions. Austerity and all. Guess it's a good thing Republicans are spending their time trying to save us a buck, right?

Except for one teeny, tiny, barely-worth-mentioning detail:

Barbara Gonzalez, an ICE spokeswoman, said the agency has not paid for abortion services since its 2003 creation.
Never mind.
Speaker Pelosi project bug

It's time to get these not-jobs-creating, time-wasting, conspiracy theorizing, lady part fetishists out of office so we can get back to actually focusing on real problems.

Let's help Democrats take back the House and get that gavel back to Nancy Pelosi. Chip in $3 or whatever you can to elect House Democrats.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

  •  I just saw a republican political ad (0+ / 0-)

In it, the spokesperson said we've gone 40 months with unemployment over 8%.  Of course, it was pointing the guilty finger towards Obama & Co. with some statements Obama made about unemployment during his 2008 run for the WH.

It was well presented but ya gotta wonder if it will be well received knowing that most people are pretty much aware of what's in this diary of the "do nothing" congress blocking anything and anything democrats have put forward to help create jobs.

Interesting that Congress wants to ban ICE from providing abortions - which they don't provide anyway.  A few other things ICE doesn't provide:

Hernia surgery.  If you are a detained immigrant, you are expected to hold it in until you are deported.

Diabetes treatment - ICE routinely fails to transfer medical records with detainees, resulting in several diabetic crises.  I don't know of any fatal ones, at least not yet.

Depression - ICE usually treats depression by throwing your ass into segregation.  That's how they treat schizophrenia sometimes, too.

Cancer - the NYT ran a series on healthcare in detention and told the story of a Chinese man who died in agony because ICE refused to provide any health care for end-stage bone cancer.

So no abortions?  Doesn't surprise me.  ICE detention standards are voluntary, not enforceable, and they deny a lot more health care to any immigrant unfortunate to end up in their custody.

oppose an organization such as Planned Parenthood that offers birth control and saves money from those who don't wish to pay millions to raise the children of others.     Someone needs to explain why Planned Parenthood is not considered a conservative organization.

Most children born out of wedlock are going to cost taxpayers plenty,  at least over their early years,  and yet these so-called conservatives hate Planned Parenthood for saving them money.

On Aug. 2, HB2625 goes into effect. This law limits women’s access to health care and contraception and it invades women’s privacy while jeopardizing their employment. The law will allow religious employers to deny insurance coverage for women’s birth control, if they disapprove of the way women are using the medication. Additionally, if a religious employer finds out that women are using birth control as contraception, the women can be fired. Arizona Capitol Times
And if that's not enough jobs for you:
Under a new Arizona abortion law that takes effect Thursday, more babies with fatal fetal defects are expected to be carried to term, even though they will die within minutes, hours or days. Arizona Republic

So, um, when did ICE get into the abortion business? Seriously?
