Yes, I am going to use that Sontag-inspired (?) "Against". And will admit, I probably heard of Chick-Fil-A before recent events, and likely didn't pay much attention, just assuming it was some god-awful fast-food chain that presented some sort of fried chicken between buns, the sort of sandwich which has never appealed to me. Somewhere in my mental history I said: I refuse to eat anything nuggetized, whether potatoes or chicken. (As I am a burger fan, I ask my hypocritical self how much a burger resembles cattle and have no answer)
I just read an editorial from a HuffPo opinionater, claiming the recent firestorm is not a first amendment issue:
But I am going to have to weigh down on the side of Glenn Greenwald in ferreting (or fileting) out what is the First Amendment issue with respect to this issue.
I support economic boycotts so much that it is tricky finding what I can buy, in good conscience.
But when politicians decide to wield their power by forbidding a business license because of a person's beliefs, it is most definitely a violation of the first amendment. The obvious case in point: what if some politicians you don't agree with decide that planned parenthood gets the axe in your neighborhood?
An arena where no one is forced/forbidden to accept another person's beliefs is pretty core to our Constitution.
