So the Lyndon LaRouche brigade came out in force at our local McDonald's in Wixom. They put up a picture of Obama with a Hitler mustache and lined the side of the road with Bill Roberts signs, with another sign that says "Pull Over if you want to stop Obama." Of course, the old people were lined up, but it created quite a stir. I've never seen so many people upset. People thought they were crazy! My co-workers and I actually started to talk about politics, and I was absolutely shocked by what I heard:
All but one was a gigantic Obama supporter!
I had never figured my co-workers to be at all politically conscious. I'm not saying they're dumb. Some people do not care about politics and haven't spent hours thinking deeply on the plethora of issues that are out there. Some, perhaps, don't have the capacity to, but they have other qualities. They're warm hearted, nice, giving, generous, hard working people and they prove that every day. So, back to the Larouchies. One of my co-workers is Jewish, and she was LIVID that the Larouchies were comparing him to Hitler, a man responsible for the death of millions. Another co-worker chimed in.
Co-Worker 1: "Didn't Hitler kill thousands of people?"
Me: "Actually more like millions. Jews, homosexuals, the mentally ill, you name it."
Co-Worker 2: "Obama hasn't built death camps for god's sake."
Then co-worker 1 said something that floored me.
Co-Worker 1: "If you ask me if he's killed anyone, he's killed Bin Laden. We looked for that guy what, six years?"
Me: "More like 10."
Co-Worker number 3 got excited and joined in.
Co-Worker #3: "If you ask me, Obama has done more to help people than to kill them. I mean, health care and all."
Co-Worker #2: "Obama has been undoing the damage Bush did. That guy fucked everything up. After him, I could never vote for a Republican."
Co-worker #1: "I mean, Bin Laden is what sold me. Hell, I'd vote for Obama just to show those assholes outside what's what."
We had one right winger, but to be honest he's the least bright of the bunch, god bless him, and I wasn't going to debate him, because it would've just been mean. I watched how many people walked out of that McDonald's emboldened to vote for Obama because of someone insulting him. Right Wing attacks (and attacks from people who are just maniacs) are a double edged sword!
