When Mitt Romney was running for a Massachuttes Senate seat in 1994, he was asked about the Boy Scouts' policy of banning gay members and leaders (he served on the Scouts' national board at the time). He made a firm declarative statement of his personal opposition.
"I feel that all people should be able to participate in the Boy Scouts regardless of their sexual orientation."
Today, the
Associated Press is reporting on the growing wave of Eagle Scouts returning their badges to the BSA, in the wake of the organization making a definitive statement
last month they had no intention of altering their policy.
Seems reporter David Crary touched base with Romney camp on the issue:
A Romney spokeswoman, Andrea Saul, said in an e-mail that this remains Romney's position today.
It'd be a shame if Romney's Christian fundamentalist base caught wind of this. Bryan Fischer, in particular,
has been doing an end zone victory dance over the Boy Scouts, and been a
particular thorn in Romney's side. Mr. Fischer would be horrified to learn Romney won't "stand up for good traditional, Christian American values" like kicking teenage boys out of the Boy Scouts.
