This is going to be short, but there has been a shooting at a Sikh Temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin with 8 - 20 shot.  The suspect is believed to be a heavy set bald guy.  Apparently, he is still out and about with two guns.  The news released so far is minimal, so if anyone has any more news, please share.  I'm from Wisconsin, but live in Vancouver, Canada now.

While I would like to stay and keep informed on this, I'm heading out to the Pride Parade in Vancouver.  I will check in again when I return......just wanted to let people know.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Authorities responded to an incident at a Sikh temple in Milwaukee County on Sunday, where at least one body was seen lying in the parking lot. CNN affiliate WTMJ is reporting that multiple people may have been shot outside the temple.

WTMJ reports that the gunman may be on the loose. Aerial pictures show multiple bodies in the parking lot.

According to information broadcast over police radio, a witness to the shooting told law enforcement the shooter was a white male, bald, with a heavy build. He was wearing a sleeveless T-shirt, according to Oak Creek Patch. He was last seen with two handguns.

upnatom65, I'll rec this thread in the hopes you keep it updated as more news comes in.

White guy going nuts on Sikhs is going to invite assumption of a hate crime, but let's try to keep speculation at bay for now.

I hear four dead so far, and the gunman either fled or holed up in the temple with hostages, depending on the source. I'm just hoping things don't get any worse.

Talk about gun control yet?  Did you know that we have had 11 presidential assassination attempts(25%) and 4 fatalities(10%)....that was news to me and a incredibly terrible history for a modern country.

    •  Will you judge who is guilty? (0+ / 0-)

How will you decide all by yourself who is sane, and who is crazy and must be stripped of our civil rights.

Do you also thank Bush and the Patriot Act for "keeping us safe"?  Do you support the loss of our 4th amendment rights?  We just need to trade a little more freedom for the illusion of security?

We cannot respond to the actions of an insane man by throwing away everything our ancestors fought for.

By your logic, after 9/11 we should have enacted a Muslim control program, because who knows who the next terrorist is.

Is that how you want to live?

Have been the target of an assassination?  I would prefer the right to go to church, or a movie theatre or to send my children to school without the fear of them ending up dead.  I know those seem trivial compared to your right to own a 60 round automatic gun but they are important to most people.

        •  Automatics are illegal. Next scare tactic please (0+ / 0-)

First, explain to me how eliminating my right to own a gun eliminates the risk of death to your children?

Does it stop them from being hit by a car?  From being abducted by a pedifile?  Does it prevent them from drowning in a pool?  Or from falling out of a tree?

Does taking away my right to own a gun in any way prevent a psychopath from attacking your children in a church, movie theatre or school?  Please explain why you expect that would work?

Second, I really don't know what assassination attempts has to do with anything.  Is it your intention to punish the entire country, to strip rights from everyone for the actions of a few individuals?  Is that how liberty and equality work in your eyes?  Are you a kindergarden teacher?  Punish all for one person's sins?
After age 6 that line of thinking becomes oppression.

Tell me, if eliminating freedom of the Press and forcing us all to believe the President, even a war criminal like Bush is flawless and perfect....
If eliminating the 1st Amendment reduced assassination attempts on our Presidents, would you support that?

And blowing the shit out of someone.  If I scream at the top of my lungs all kinds of ugly things at you, you can turn your back on me and walk away.  You pull out a gun, you can steal every other right I have.....the two things are not equivalent. Do you realize that only 59,000 people died in the Vietnam war which covered 1965 to 1973.  The number of people killed in a similar 8 year span is 88,000 , when will there be enough blood sacrificed on the altar of the 2nd amendment.

    •  Nope--still not time to discuss gun control. (0+ / 0-)

      Just try suggesting it....................

It's my belief that any country that cannot control violent public shootings............... is a country that has given up control---- to someone else.

      Can you imagine?

The United States of America---most powerful country in the world------ and we cannot control public shootings----- because every time we even try to discuss more restrictive gun- laws and less lax legislation ----someone yells "2nd Amendment rights being violated"---------

      And we shit our pants.

"But the protesters were only armed with chalk---the cops had guns and batons----and they were beating the protesters."

    •  Let's see if there is yet another run (4+ / 0-)

      on guns-n-ammo after this.

When the guns are banned, there are so many of them in this country a black market will miraculously appear with all sorts of violent types who aren't going to comply with the law running guns just like pot or alcohol.

      Only a lot more violent.

I don't own a real gun and a ban won't directly affect me so i'd not seem to have a dog in this fight: I am concerned with the nurturing of criminal organizations that prohibitions do.

Guys that are going to shoot people up like this aren't going to be stopped by banning guns.

    Update at 1:13 ET:

Two shooters are possibly still inside with children as hostages, according to someone who sent a text message to a Journal Sentinel reporter, the Journal-Sentinel reports.

This is the only report I saw of "two" shooters, but CNN also said something about hostages, but I haven't other details.

  •  After 9-11 low info shooter killed a Sikh man (0+ / 0-)

thinking a guy with a turban was a Muslim... and why shooting ANYone he thought was a Muslim was justifiable in any way shape or form as a reaction for the actions of a very tiny minority in a global religion with many variations only illustrates how ignorant far too many Americans were then and still are... and here were are a decade later.... is this yet another ignorant, violent, misguided idiot?... Is this a repeat with a defective human who sets out to kill people of a certain description or identity as determined by him and tragically does just that and yet again can't even identify his presumed target correctly... just people who are "different" and therefore Muslims?? And they die tragically instead of others? Doubly wrong again, un-Christian, inhuman and stupid too.

    •  We've no idea as to the motivation (0+ / 0-)

of the shootings yet, so we shouldn't speculate.  Keep in mind that the vast majority of shootings are motivated by personal reasons and done by someone who knows the victims.

      •  Of course... but also the Unitarian shooting (0+ / 0-)

and The mass shooting at the Gabby Gifford's meeting both involved a stranger with warped thinking...

so to be sure, far more shootings involve people known to the victims... with personal vendettas or grudges being involved.... estranged family members etc...

But somehow a Sikh Gurdwara does not strike me as a place where a White guy with family or employment problems would be linked to anyone there... not impossible but less likely...

But as you say... we do have to wait and see... but with the number of information lite, low intelligence Americans feeling like they are under threat and goaded by  Rush, FOX, the Republican party, talk radio etc... there is a strong probability of it being one of them involved...

        •  Do we know for sure it was a white guy? (0+ / 0-)

Considering the initial reports of 2 shooters has been refuted, I would not put much stock in that claim, either.

No, there is not a "strong probability" of anything as of yet, except what I initially said--the most likely case is that the perp is a member of the community, known to the victims acting on a personal grievance.  It's possible it is a hate crime, sure... but we just don't have enough knowledge of the facts to say so as of yet.
