It's been a rough couple of weeks here in perpendicular-to-the-surface-of-the-earth-land.
I didn't even feel like jousting with the most recent bozos to call me up from the Romney campaign, but I have a lot of balls in the air right now, and I wasn't sure the number that showed up on caller ID might not be important.
But it wasn't. It was just another shill from the shill-machine. I was about to hang up, annoyed by the pre-recorded voice talking about the nerve...THE NERVE...of the "most secretive individual in history" - you got it, Barack Obama - who was refusing to release the records from his law firm (attorney client privilege, anyone? but you know, these people, I'm sorry, this is prejudiced of me, but they are stupid so very stupid -- no, you cannot influence the Supreme Court via petition, stupid people, and refusing to release taxes is not the same as refusing to release a birth certificate, which, guess what, didn't even happen...Seriously, those newspaper fact checkers? Why don't they take a few phone calls at home).
So, I'm about to hang up, when I hear this phrase, that the organization behind the phone call is going to conduct "the most brazen campaign" to bring down Barack Obama.
I couldn't help it, people who don't know English are so funny.
Eventually a human came on the line, and asked me if I would give $250 or $500 to help Mitt Romney. There are a lot of answers to that question, but instead of answering, I asked one back,
"Do you know what the word "brazen" means?"
what? he said
"Your recorded message says that you're planning to conduct a "brazen" campaign...do you know what the word "brazen" means?" I asked again
um, bold? he said
"No," I said, sniggering helplessly "it's primary meaning is "shameless" -- you usually hear it paired with the noun "hussy" -- so here you have this pre-recorded message, that you're spamming all over the country, is announcing to everyone that you are conducting a "shameless campaign" -- it's funny because it's true"
I laughed helplessly a while longer.
so you believe that "brazen" means "shameless" he said -- apparently they have this script for dealing with people who aren't just frothing at the mouth to give money to their candidate, which involves this mirroring technique, I think I've read another diary here recounting the same phenomenon
"It's not part of a belief system" I said" laughing harder "it's a dictionary definition, and the most common usage of the world. You guys are hilarious"
We ended the conversation amicably enough, but seriously, "brazen campaign"? Romney is really bad at this stuff.
