And this Mitt Romney heartwarming story will backfire in 3...2...1...
Basically, Mitt doesn't like to get personal, but when he does embellish in a personal tale (to try to connect with us regular folks), he invariably reminds everybody just how insanely disconnected from us he is. The latest story is that he once found a little card given to his dad as a thank you from McDonalds that entitled him to a lifetime of free Mickey D's. This definitely beats, "I have some friends who are NASCAR team owners"...
From The New York Times's George Romney’s Extra, Extra-Value Meals
“You know how boys liked to go through their dad’s top drawer, just to sort of see what he has in there, maybe find an old coin he might not miss?” Mr. Romney asked the audience.
Mr. Romney recalled doing just that: rummaging through his father’s drawer one day when he was in his teens or early 20s.
“I found a little paper card, a little pink card, and it said this entitles George W. Romney to a lifetime of a hamburger, a shake and French fries at McDonald’s,” Mr. Romney said. “It was signed by the hand of Ray Kroc.”
[snip]
And he would present this little card, and of course, the person behind the counter would look and say, ‘Well, what is that?’ They’d never seen something like that, but he said it was never turned down.
I think Mediaite
sums it up best:
Because what sounds more relatable to voters than an anecdote about your businessman father being presented a card for free food by another businessman?
Hasn't Mitt been running for office for like a decade? Shouldn't he know better by now? SMH.
Look, there's nothing inherently wrong with being rich, unless you get there by using blood money, or want to stay there by gutting the rest of us. Things like that.
I guess I'll just leave it at that.
UPDATE
Some common reactions from down below in the comments. And by common, I mean common!
1. This is just creepy.
2. Why's a grown-ass man rummaging through his dad's draw–WHAT THE HELL?!?
3. Mitt's got a lot of cents but absolutely no sense.
He avoided the draft, he avoids releasing his tax returns, and now we know he values avoiding paying for burgers...what will he avoid next? That is one dodgy Mitt...
