Okaaaay... You tell me what this is about.  Really about. No - I mean really about.
The cartoonist will no doubt deny (Toby Toons will say this has nothing to do with dog-whistle race-baiting since he knows how disgusting it is and - thankfully - "not PC").  But not plausibly.

It is meant to make certain people laugh. The laughers are tuned in to the whistle.

Oh, I found it on that chaaaaarming site, redstate, a site I should never check out on an empty stomach.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

after Mitt is through, should say "Made in China".

Mitt has proven that he'd sell out the American People, because he's done it for years.

  •  Actually, I don't think (9+ / 0-)

This is a "dog whistle" unless simply showing figures of Obama (a black person) and Romney (a white person) in a cartoon favoring Romney is racist. What I can't help thinking (esp with that "made in USA" tag) is how much Romney's platform is the antithesis of the 50's, a time when financial innovation was frowned upon, when union membership was at its zenith, and the top marginal income tax rate was around 90%.

    •  I hear you (4+ / 0-)

... but sadly, I think kindhearted people just can't believe that "back to the 50s" could be intended to evoke white racial resentment.  But that is where the cartoon's chuckle is designed to come from.  Why is Romney falsely accusing Obama of destroying welfare reform?  It's a dog whistle: mentioning welfare is simply meant to remind a certain part of his base that, yes, the President is black.  The constant racial over-and-undertones on sites like, not only about the President but about the First Lady and their children (!), are what tuned me in to the dog whistle.  I'd prefer an America where you're right and I'm wrong, but from Nixon's "Southern strategy" to GHW Bush's Willy Horton shame, to Romney on welfare reform, I think we still have far to go.

      •  I think you're absolutely correct. (3+ / 0-)

A depiction of a black man pointing at Romney and saying he will "take us back to the 1950s" is clearly a reference to the pre-civil rights era.

What's interesting to me is that Romney's thought bubble is an accurate portrayal of how many whites who support a racist society like to portray themselves.

In other words, the bubble could just as well say "Me?  I don't hate black people.  I just support freedom (Statue of Liberty)!", all the while pretending racism doesn't exist.

        You nailed this one!

      •  It could mean a lot of things. (4+ / 0-)

Race issues aren't the only things that sucked about the 1950s.  Gender segregation existed in everything from education to employment, women couldn't get credit, we had mandatory prayer in schools, environmental protection was practically non-existent, birth control was illegal in many areas, workplace safety regulations were a joke, and if you were gay, well, you'd better keep that to yourself.

And that's just a handful of things that come to mind immediately. Maybe we need a comprehensive list to pull out when someone starts talking about how nice it would be to go back to the 1950s. Race would be a part of it, but only a part of it.

  •  The real 1950s (4+ / 0-)

Mccarthyism.  Jim Crow laws except for the US Armed Forces, and that with a lot of screaming and foot-dragging. The screaming and foot-dragging that went along with "with all deliberate speed" (and may I remind you that the board of education in Brown v Board was in Topeka, hardly the deep south). A publishing apparatus designed to keep women at home in the new suburban households so THEY could protect their husbands from the temptations of homosexuality.

It's more than racist.  It's misogynist too, among other things.

  •  Romney and the 50s tax rates? uh huh... (1+ / 0-)

Like he will bring that back... and the era of waste on things like Nuclear powered bomber project boondoggle... the era when Eisenhower warned about the Military Industrial Complex... Of course that never went away unlike the progressive tax rates.

And like the other commenters mentioned all the elements of American Apartheid from the 50s and before... from separate waiting rooms, drinking fountains, back of the bus etc... to the old style suppression and marginalization in jobs, education, voting, holding office... (as opposed to the newer somewhat more concealed updated versions)
