In an interview with KLBJ in Austin, Danny Vela, pharmacy owner in Texas and member of the Rio Grande Valley Independent Pharmacy Association, talks about how the state has taken an efficiently run program (that was once a model for all states), and inserted a layer of bureaucracy in the form of two for-profit companies between the state and the pharmacies.
The result has been a study in what not to do, with 26 independent community pharmacies closing their doors because of the reduced reimbursements in the new programs. Plus, the state has made it difficult for beneficiaries to get their medications at all, much less in a timely manner.
