And while making the announcement in of all places Norfolk VA!

After they rubber stamped All the costs of these two present generations wars, off the books till the present administration and All on borrowed monies, of choice, yes Afghanistan became after they abandoned, with the countries almost full support, the Main Mission of why we sent troops into that region with the first drum beats pointed at Iraq. Same never demanded the country Sacrifice even though they had already started rubber stamping which had erased the surplus and deficits then started rising before 9/11.

Noem pitches need for budget cuts to veterans
But a budget proposal by top Republican Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin to trim spending at the Department of Veterans Affairs had some DAV members worried.

"If they go and approve this, we will have some of the smaller VA facilities closing down in rural states," said Gene Murphy, the state DAV director. "Then you're going to put these veterans' into the Medicare and Medicaid programs."

Budget Panel Eyes End to VA Care for 1.3 Million Vets
The House Budget Committee, chaired by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), has told a veterans' group it is studying a plan to save $6 billion annually in VA health care costs by cancelling enrollment of any veteran who doesn't have a service-related medical condition and is not poor.

Committee Republicans, searching for ways to curb federal deficits and rein in galloping VA costs, are targeting 1.3 million veterans who claim priority group 7 or 8 status and have access to VA care.

Veteran's benefits won't be slashed?
President Barack Obama pledged on Tuesday that there won't be any cutting of benefits for America's veterans while he's in the White House.

Addressing The American Legion's 93rd Annual National Convention in Minneapolis, the President said veterans wouldn't bear the brunt of federal cutbacks, in spite of the fact veteran's benefits are clearly in the cross hairs of the Republican Tea Party (GOTP) controlled House and its fiscal crusade.

That's what, deja-vu all over again and for decades now, the phony 'strong on national defense' politics of the right, lining the pockets and bank accounts of the defense contractors with no cuts sought, and many in the country served, think of those who served the country and those they served with who lost their lives or were maimed in many ways, after those years Sacrificed and joined in that Sacrifice by their families!

Most of these veterans would then need to seek help in Medicaid or Medicare of which they also want to cut instead of fixing their own huge mistakes that bring on corruption, and campaign funds from, in the policies they've passed!

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Really has nothing to do with it, but at one time there really was a republican party and representatives that could be worked with, it's always been as for the most part the country ignores those they've sent into their flag wavin wars and fully support the no Sacrifice as to their responsibility the VA!!

The only time before the present administration and especially the present VA administration has tried to build a VA we should have always had, and haven't since Korea, is when Cleland was VA Secretary and the repubs blocked him in many wants and long issues, but he tried and not for political meme's of support nor photo ops as elections rolled around!

      •  Well , yeah in a way it does (0+ / 0-)

because they now demand insurance and some veterans are expected to qualify in the money pit and that should never happen.  They kinda make up the money threshold as they go along and with more and more cutbacks, it not only hurts the incoming new vets but killing the older ones in the system being pushed back and making tighter budgets when their needs are having to be outsourced due to the disabilities that are going unattended.  Like so many depend on food stamps and their partners trying to do what should be done if the vet was not disabled like having to farm out chores so Ryan being who he is  makes it harder on the families of vets.

Cleland is awesome.   I know that gentleman.

you could name everything both Mitt and Ryan are doing to the Vets, Medicare, and all social programs til you are blue in the face.
I have been looking at the boards in the Red States, and these people just don't see it.
Mostly it is because they hate Obama so much and say he has put this country so far in to debt.
They also will not consider it was Bush who did that by starting 2 wars and cutting taxes.

  •  Excellent writeup, Jim (11+ / 0-)

It's no surprise to any veteran who actually pays attention that GOP policies are not military or vet friendly.  I really don't know how they continue to wave the bloody shirt, year after year, and get away with it when both active duty and vets know better.

Here's some great oppo research on Ryan's record on veterans affairs.

  •  It amazes me why so many vets are such hard Rs (7+ / 0-)

    When all the Repubs have ever done is eff them over. Hey vets, excuse us while we;

    - Lie you into wars
    - Attempt to cut your pay
    - Attempt to cut your benefits
    - Make jokes about lying you into wars
    - Make billions of dollars war-profiteering while you're fighting, dying, and getting horribly injured for minimum wage
    - Arrange for our cronies to be paid billions of dollars to build incredibly dangerous facilities for you that are not only deficient, but electrocute you in the showers
    - Attempt to close down military hospitals and therapy centers
    - Use you as pawns while we make chickenhawk threats to start even more wars, while we and our sons sit safely home in cushy jobs

I could go on like this, but you get my point.

  •  Clinton Healthcare Program for Veterans (8+ / 0-)

The Clinton Administration opened the doors to the VA for ALL veterans as a universal healthcare program for all veterans.

I had been downsized from a middle-management job in the early 90's and lost my health insurance coverage.  I went to my local VA hospital and was surprised to find I could be given services without service-connection on a fee-for-service basis.

I pay for my prescriptions, office visits and all in-patient services I have received.

Then, George W. Bush became President and Secretary of the VA, Anthony Principi, as one of his first official acts was to remove any semblance of a universal single-payer healthcare from the VA. He stopped taking any new participants in the VA Healthcare Program. Thereby, ending the Veterans Healthcare Program for ALL veterans.

If you were already in the program, you were grandfathered to stay, but at any moment I could loose my access to VA. With that treat hanging over me and being an OLD Vietnam War veteran with far less income, I have continued to maintain my enrollment and pay my premiums to Medicare.

NOW, Ryan being embraced today by Romney saying, "every now and then I make a mistake", wants to remove me, a cash paying user, from the VA healthcare program.

  •  My WWII vet father has recently (5+ / 0-)

been having a tough go of it with the VA hospital.  They are not sending him his prescriptions anymore.  They recommended some eye surgery, but said he would need to go outside the VA system.
his regular checkups are every 6 months, instead of every 60 days.  If they cut his services any more, it will be the end of him.
Now, these candidates want to repeal the health care law, which allows me to get pre-existing condition insurance, then want to privatize Medicare and cut social security benefits, the two programs I am counting on for retirement.
Republicans will be the death of my family.

Here is a rough draft of one I am composing, which applies to my 4th CD in Oregon:

Today, Mitt Romney slapped millions of American Veterans in the face. He named Paul Ryan his vice-presidential choice.

Mitt Romney avoided military service during the Viet Nam war, but organized demonstrations in favor of the war, and of the draft. Paul Ryan never served, just as none of Mitt’s five ever served.

Paul Ryan’s budget plan is to slash about 1.3 million veterans from VA eligibility to save six billion dollars. Romney’s tax plan is to increase taxes on Americans earning less than $250,000 per year to pay for huge tax breaks for billionaires and millionaires like himself.  Kick veterans to the curb; buy more dancing horses and car elevators; funnel more money to the Caymans and the Bahamas; repeat.

Most members of Congress have never served (just as Art Robinson never served; just as none of Art’s sons ever served). Republicans have endorsed the Ryan budget, slashing veterans’ benefits.

Peter DeFazio served in the Air Force during the Viet Nam war era. Peter DeFazio always supports veterans. Peter DeFazio will always support veterans.

As a veteran, and as a taxpayer, I’m deeply offended by Romney and Ryan. I’m voting for President Obama, and for Peter DeFazio.

    Suggests and edits welcome.

Most of all, please consider doing letters of your own. Our local paper wants documentations of assertions, so this diary has some very useful links and ideas.

a vet talks disapprovingly about their budget's 13% cut in VA spending, romney's (now abandoned) proposal to privatize veterans' health care and with ryan's statement that general's lied to congress (which is a crime).

it would work better if the vet had served under one of the generals whom ryan accused of lying.  that way he could say it was disrespectful to the military.
