As most readers know, Hector Balderas recently lost to Martin Heinrich, the next Senator from New Mexico. But he sure did give it a very interesting run indeed.

Way back in August 2011, Mr. Balderas caught my attention as a gutsy and savvy politician: he came out for marriage equality (pun intended). I used to belong to the Gay/Straight Alliance at my last school, so this really caught my attention.

Since Mr. Balderas is a staunch supporter of civil rights, this was a no-brainer for him. However, knowing about the BS stereotype of hispanics on social issues, I remember thinking that the compliant NM press would utterly destroy him. Instead, there was a perplexing silence on the issue, followed shortly by Mr. Heinrich crying out "Uh, me too!" (good for you, BTW!).

So, in summation:

Hector Balderas provided ethical guidance on a very important issue, standing on principle, thus creating a safe environment that allowed others the chance to be persuaded. Isn't that the very definition of "leadership"?
I know I couldn't have been prouder to be an American and a New Mexican!

Of course, this was by no means the only reason that I support him. I am certainly not a one issue person. So I did what any sensible, science-embracing, technology-loving, Progressive Math Nerd would do:

I went to his website.

Holy Great Issues To Run A Campaign On, Batman!! Go ahead. Click that link above. You'll be amazed at what you'll find.

NOTE: I will be having the high honor of discussing Mr. Balderas on the issues in future posts.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Do you know what his future political plans are? He's term-limited in his present position. How about governor?

... for Governor (I also believe that was his plan all along!). PPP has already done polling on him vs Gov. Martinez: 51 Martinez to 37 Balderas (I'll try to find the link) and Mr. Balderas hasn't even announced! I'll bet the Balderas team is pumped! Thanks for the comment and the rec!

because she's Hispanic. If Hispanic Dems could vote for another Hispanic Dem, I think that would be preferable. Susana is a good campaigner, but Hector is better. Please keep us informed.

          That's a great name, BTW.

I agree that she is popular, but I also attribute that to the horrible reporters we have in NM that refuse to ask her the tough questions. She really is no different that the other bad R Guvs (WI, FL, OH, etc.). Only this Governor knows how to keep her mouth shut!

I will try my best to keep as many people informed about this (soon to be) great Governor. Thanks for the comment.

unlike those you mentioned. And we have to keep it that way. Please encourage everyone you know to vote for their legislators in the coming election. Apparently, we only have a 1 vote margin in the House.

... as important as who is at the top of the ticket. I will try to remember to mention that in future posts.

Thanks for the great suggestion and comment!
