When I read about Todd Akin's ignorant comments about how "legitimate rape" doesn't lead to pregnancy, I went ballistic.  First, I wrote about it on my local blog, but that didn't feel like enough.  So I did something that I only rarely do in life: I created a new Facebook page.  I invite you, if you indulge in Facebook, to like it.

The thrust of the Facebook page is this: Rep. Akin's comments are so ignorant, so far out of line, so completely unacceptable, that even his fellow Republican nominees for U.S. Senate have to condemn them.  I included all of his fellow nominees on the page; they are included in the list below.

I expect one or two nominees -- maybe Linda Lingle and Scott Brown -- to condemn Akin's remarks.  The rest -- I don't know if they have the decency and the fortitude.  I put this request onto California Senate nominee Elizabath Akin's Facebook page just after I wrote my story -- and I was gone.

We need to make this horrific, telling blunder memorable.  We need to put the GOP Senate candidates on the spot, so they can in turn put Rep. Akin on the spot, so that no one ever does this particular foolish thing again.  Like my page and start contacting people listed below -- especially the one in your state.

Let's turn this into a rout.  Until Rep. Akin ends up feeling like Wile E. Coyote, I won't feel satisfied.

Here's the full list of GOP nominees for U.S. Senate:

* Jeff Flake of Arizona
* Elizabeth Emken of California
* Linda McMahon of Connecticut
* Kevin Wade of Delaware
* Cornelius McGillicuddy of Florida
* Linda Lingle of Hawaii
* Richard Mourdock of Indiana
* Charlie Summers of Maine
* Dan Bongino of Maryland
* Scott Brown of Massachusetts
* Peter Hoekstra of Michigan
* Kurt Bills of Minnesota
* Roger Wicker of Mississippi
* Denny Rehberg of Montana
* Deb Fischer of Nebraska
* Dean Heller of Nevada
* Joseph Kyrillos of New Jersey
* Heather Wilson of New Mexico
* Wendy Long of New York
* Rick Berg of North Dakota
* Josh Mandel of Ohio
* Tom Smith of Pennsylvania
* Barry Hinckley of Rhode Island
* Bob Corker of Tennessee
* Ted Cruz of Texas
* Orrin Hatch of Utah
* John MacGovern of Vermont
* George Allen of Virginia
* Michael Baumgartner of Washington
* John Raese of West Virginia
* Tommy Thompson of Wisconsin
* John Barrasso of Wyoming
Please contact these Republican nominees for U.S. Senate and ask them to stand up for honesty and decency and condemn Rep. Todd Akin's ignorant, damaging, and embarrassing remarks.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

    ..your outrage, & support what you are doing, but you must understand all the senators you list agree with Akins.

    Put it this way:  If they dare disagree with Akins, their political careers will be over by this Wednesday.  The abortion fanatics will move in and (to use a Daily Kos favorite) eviscerate them.

    Their War on Women is serious & uncompromising.

    The only apologies they will offer is an apology that Akin said it before they could.

    what distinguishes a "legitimate rape", from an "illigimate rape"? also, i want to know what drugs rep. akin (R-Stupid) is on, and where i can get some, to be used only within the confines of my private residence, of course. oh, and i promise to make no public comments, while under the influence of same.

    i'd also like to know how one congressional district managed to accumulate such a large number of stupid people, all in one place. the more i think about it, no, really stupid people are not entitled to be represented in congress, that would be kind of defeating the whole point of congress to begin with.

      of argument.  This is one of those times.  After all, he's a lower form of thinker.

      There may be a grain of truth in the notion that on some occasions the emotional state of the mother will lead to a miscarriage.  There is no grain of truth in the sweeping statement that therefore rape victims can't get pregnant -- and that, therefore, no exception for rape is needed in anti-abortion laws (which is his point.)

      you cannot be more wrong.

      There is NO SHRED of truth in Akins' crazy statement.

      I don't care what your friend told you, that is not science.  There are 1000 reasons she might not have gotten pregnant.  And although it's true that women become pregnant after adopting, so the hell what?  What does that prove?  Nothing.

      Not sure what you mean by this statement:  "The state is full of people with actual experience of happily raising babies that many other people would have aborted."

      •  I think that the "grain of truth" (0+ / 0-)

        he's talking about is that some women do miscarry due to, among other possible factors, stress.  I certainly have known women who have attributed a miscarriage to that.  The leap from there to "women's bodies expel rapists' babies" is ludicrous, but I don't think that LNK is asserting that.

        If LNK is talking about, say, trisomy-21 babies, it may well be true.  I presume that the significance of the point is to show how anti-abortion Missouri is, nothing more.

        The comment raised my hackles too, but I don't think that it was ill-intentioned.  "Kernel of truth" is a difficult concept to handle, like "dynamite" difficult.

            I've known LNK on this site for years and I like him.  Good activist.  So I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.  A conflation of "get pregnant" and "stay pregnant" doesn't seem too much of a stretch to me, but I admit my bias.  I think that the point against his analysis has been made.  Aim fire elsewhere, eh?

        •  LNK replies. (0+ / 0-)

          I have studied a lot of biology and science.
          Agreed, there is no exact mechanism for preventing pregnancy but do consider that major shocks (physical and psychological) really can screw up a person's physiology and make normal systems cease to function. Extreme fear and grief, for example can even kill you.

          Infertility is one of those areas of science where there are many unknowns. Some couples only conceive a child after a major change such as adopting a baby (it is thought perhaps that the sound of a baby crying has an effect on a woman's hormones), or exposure to certain smells in nature such as pine or fir trees. Big relaxation can shift a couple's ability to conceive, too.

          As for Missouri people raising babies that other people might have aborted, I have spoken to people and read interviews with others who kept babies that even the doctor suggesting aborting (because of abnormalities).
          Bottom Line: CHOICE!
          But tread lightly among people who are totally unfamiliar with the realities that other people face.

          Thanks.

          Sorry if I didn't express myself clearly the first time.
